Title: Insane Happening

Hi people its been a while. I remember asking a while back if it is possible for my killer swordtail to crossbreed with a male black molly. Well at first they seemed quite atached to each other which got me thinking but people said that it is impossible for them to crossbreed. So no it has been a while later. I cannot tell you the date but i removed all fish from my swordstail tank for a while now. The only livebearer fish that my swordtail has had contact with is a male black moly which got returned because of agression. Anyways, i bought my swordtail a new male which is her size although slighly lighter in colour and put him in with her. She wouldent stop biting him so i isolated her in a net thing in the same tank so they could get auainted withoyt biting. I was taking a few pictures of my 75 galon tank which is looking quite good now, and decided to take some pics of my goldfish as well. I took a look in the net to see whats goin on with my two swordtails and i noticed a little baby!!! I imediatly removed her from it because the little ones had no place to hide, i didnt even use a net i gently scooped her out with my hand and put her into a breeding V. Well no new fish have come out so far so il keep her in till morning to be sure, but I have 10 babies that are alive and well. THe only problem is I have no idea what to expect. I swear this fish has had contact with a black moly and thats it. All other fish it had contact with were egg layers like my rosy barbs, and tetras. Other bottom dwellers like my cory cats chinise algea eaters and a spoted dojo or weather loach im not sure but these ones are a mix.
So here is my question. Am i the first one this has happened to???
cheers :drunk: :woo: :boxer:

I dont know about mollies and swordtails - but mollies and guppies can certainly interbreed. That is how the females are getting so much bigger and more colourful! Some happy go lucky realised that crossing with mollies added the irridecance you see on the bodies of female guppies now.
The other thing worth remembering is that most of the livebearers can store sperm - enabling them to continue producing clutches without a male around.

I'd love to see some pics!

yeah but the part about my red swordtail i left out is it has had no contact with a male swordtail for over a year and a half... :boxer: in fact it has had no contact with another fish for over a year and a half, untill its rescent moly encounter
the fry are swimming around in their own netted off compartment of the tank where it is oxygen rich. I think i had more than 9 babies but only the strong ones remained uneaten when they were confined with their carnavourous mother for a while...

also note that female live bearers can be fertilized ONCE and have babies for up to 8 months or so after.
So if the female was ever in the tank at the Store where you got her, with an assortment of genders, she could have mated there and just decided that now is the right time to have the babies
