Title: Set up my pond today!

Leema - February 18, 2006 07:13 AM (GMT)
jay

Here's some shots of my pond. No fish in it yet, but it will have 3 shnubkin goldies, 10ish white cloud minnows and 7 hillstream loaches, when the time comes. (It's about 50 gallons give or take.)

We still need to work out a better way for how the plants are... The big papyrus kept blowing over. So it's all bricked up.

That's a slick little set up there, I really like it.

I agree that is one cool little pond, stop giving me money spending ideas

It's been really good as I've reused/found stuff... Pricelist so far:

$155 - black tub for pond. (Birthday present. ;))
$39 - all plants.
$0 - pump (bought a new one for my 5ft).
$0 - gravel (left over from when I bought my 3ft 4 years ago).
$0 - piping & elbow joint (left over from trickle filter in 5ft).
$0 - biomaterial (left over from trickle filter in 5ft).
$0.48 - bucket for filter. ;)
$0.28 - stopper for spraybar.
$0 - terracotta pots (scabbed from a friend).

So $194 so far.

I still need to get more foam for the filter ($12-24) and some smaller terracotta pots ($2.50). And fish! :D

Oh no... Wooly... Have I made it worse?

I'm liking the setup :) but from my view it looks pretty crouded, overall good job :)

Looks good! If you stagger the bricks they will provide hidy-holes for the smaller fish as well as holding up the plant. jay :winner:

Tomorrow I'm going to dismantle it all and try to get it sitting better without so many bricks and ugliness. I also got some more pebbles ($4) and some smaller terracotta pots ($1.90) today.

Here are some more shots! :woo:
The large papyrus is a real pain. It's looking all droopy now - it's not happy with its move from the garden centre to my pond. Blargh. Hopefully, as it gets new growth, it will go upright!

Still no fish. ;)

Are you supposed to leave the rubberbands on it? Maybe if you take the rubberband off and just tie it loosely with string? :dunno:

Leema - February 22, 2006 05:58 AM (GMT)
It's actually a twist tie. It's only on the dwarf papyrus because some of them were broken and hanging over the sides of the pond. I realised it was tied still soon after taking the photos and untied it. Now the broken bits just hang in the water. ;)

omg awesome setup xD But the plants aren't looking too good

Leema - February 23, 2006 04:24 AM (GMT)
The papyruses are shitty. The new shoots on them are looking good, though. I'm going to cut all the growth off the both of them and just let the new growth take over. jay They're pretty stuffed from the move.
The umbrella grass (in the small pot) is going great, as is the lily.
