Title: Betta in Community tank?
Denney - February 19, 2006 02:44 PM (GMT)
I'll probably get flamed for this but I'm going to ask anyway.
I've got a 77ltr tropical community tank. It only contains a few fish (5 x neons, 1 x bristlenose, 1 x clownloach, 1 x albino cory & 2 small crays).
I have always like the look of Bettas and have always wanted one. I don't particularly want to keep it in a small tub or anything. I would prefer to put it in my community tank.
Is this a good idea??
I am an accomplished fish carer but I'm not to sure about Betta's yet.
Also, how many Betta's would be a safe number to put into this tank?

You wont be flamed about that! ;)
I have in the past put male bettas in community aqauriums, but this was a 55 gallon tank. I'm not sure how big a 77 ltr aquarium is. As long as there is plenty of room and there are no fin nippers, your betta and other tank inhabitants will get along. If you mean Crays as crayfish, I'd keep an eye on them. I never trusted crayfish with small fragile fish.
Buy a few female bettas, very peaceful, pretty, and get along with many community fishes. Hope this helps. =)

I kept my daughters betta in my 30gal with neons, a rainbow shark and a sailfin pleco, and the only problem I had was that the neons were tiny and some became snacks, I don't know who munched them but they vanished.
As long as you don't have any fin-nippers or fish that look similar to bettas you should be ok.
You could get 1 male or a couple of females but you need to keep an eye on them in the tank because fish are like people, some just don't play well with others and may need to be seperated.
Good luck!

definitey doesnt hurt to try putting a male betta in a community tank. If worse comes to worse, you can pluck him out and throw him in a small tank :P

Do it! I have kept bettas in community tanks before - I think they make wonderful community fish, and I think the practice should be encouraged!

Well, I guess it's decided then. :P I'll get one or two and see how they go. I read a little more on then last night and most people have no problems with them in a community tank.
Thanks for the reply's guys.

I'd stick with one. ^^;
If your tank isn't big enough...they will kill eachother.

Crayfish?
I wouldn't be putting those in a community tank...
Remove the crays and I'd say that a betta would go well in the tank. :)
You could have numerous girls or just one boy. Girls seem to pick on boys, so I wouldn't do that.

I got one today. The 2 crayfish I have are only small feeder crayfish. The clown loaches pick on them even...
Oh yeah, I also picked up another clown loach today for cheap. Give my first one a new friend.

Here's the size of my 1 of my crays:

Just an update... After a couple of days, I've decided to swap out my Betta for my Convict. Two reasons for this:
1. The convict does really need more than a 10ltr tank to grow up in.
2. The convict was a LOT less aggresive towards the other fish than the Betta is. I picked a very tempramental (sp?) Betta. He pretty much took over the entire tank.

Ah well, they all have their own personalities.
What is the betta living in now?

He's in the 10ltr tank my convict was in. Plenty of room for him in there. Well, more than what he had in the shop, that's for sure.
He seems quite happy in there. He's swimming around joyfully and he likes to hide behind the filter.

soooo you're putting your convict in your community tank???
if so.. say bye bye to your fish lol.... the convicts get huge and will eat anything that can fit in their mouths

I know that convicts get big so while he's small he's staying in the community tank. I'm getting a 4-6foot tank in about a month or two so he'll go in there after that.
At least the convict is a hell of a lot less aggresive in my community tank.
