who here has one? i was thinking of putting one together to top off my sump. i lose alot of water to evaporation( usually 3 gallons in about 4 days) and sometimes i don't get home for 3 or 4 days at a time and am worried about running my return pump dry one of these times.

who here has at least thought about running something like this?

You could use a gravity feed with a float valve(like in a swamp cooler). Hubby thought about it when I had the 30long. He didn't like the waterfall effect of the HOB.

thanks for the reply dtroup. i was thinking of a float switch that would control a powerhead sitting in a reserve(plastic storage comtainer) of dechlorinated water.

You could use a ball-cock like in a cammode or the kind of float valve farmers use on stock tanks( can't remember what they are called) but for space considerations I'd go with the swamp cooler float.

As for the pump you will need somthing that doesn't have to run continusly.

You coould go with a 5gal water jug(Wall mart $5) sitting on it's side with the pour spout open and tubing attached to the float valve, no pump needed jay . Just set it on a shelf slightly higher than the sump.

very cool idea dorothy, i may try this. the only limit i have is space between the top of the sump and bottom of the display tank.

thank you for the suggestions.
