cich1 - February 25, 2006 10:21 PM (GMT)
thanks guys.
seedy, i am actually going to tranfer the geo to my 55 which has a playsand substrate. these fish are just being quarantened in my 15.:)

Ever tried keeping Geo's with "community fish"? (angels, danios, loaches and stuff)
cich1 - February 26, 2006 04:06 AM (GMT)
nope can't say i have. this is my first geo, unless you can count the rams(microgeophagus altispinosa). i have heard conflicting reports on the aggressiveness with geo's and "community fish". but from what i have gathered so far at least with the surinamensis is that they don't usually bother the smaller fish. i would think they would be okay with angels as well because geo's spend most of their time on the bottom and angels are pretty much top dwellers.

Nice geo, I have one (Look at the profile in FAQ :) ) They get more and more colorful as they grow, and mine has always been my Gold sev's shadow  They aren't too agressive, and they would rather run than fight, but they can still be nippy on occasion :P

thanks dwarfs, and thank you shadow. i just went down to the lfs after work today and the guy said he wasn't planning on ordering any of these guys for awhile but if i came down there tommorrow i could take a look at the list and he would place an order for me if they were on the list he has to choose from. he said it may take up to a month to get them.:( i really want to get a pair of these guys breeding. i haven't had any fry around since i got rid of my female cons.

thanks alex, i'll get some pics up of it in the 55, with sand the fish is much happier now.

so i got a reply on another board saying, my fish could in fact be geophagus altifrons and not surinamensis because my fish lacks the dark blotch on it's flanks. what are your guys thoughts on this? every pic in aqualog of surinamensis has a dark blotch on it's flank and altifrons has none. here are a couple new pics. sorry they are so crappy, the fish is rather skittish when it comes to the camera and my tank has water spots all over it. :shy:

Cich....
Altifrons are like 100x better than surinemensis
My first thoughts were altifron aswell. But im no pro...
Seedy - March 6, 2006 05:43 PM (GMT)
Sicky....I'm not sure that going by the "splotch" is going to be indicitave of the species....I'm certainly not an expert with these fish, but the image searches I did found pictures of both species with and with out the dark spot....I suspect their may be a lot of confusion regarding these two species....my suggestion would be to try to find out who originally described these two species, and try to find the two descrptions, and make a judgment based off of that...
Steve - March 7, 2006 07:09 AM (GMT)
Im pretty sure its an altifron.
It doesnt look like any surin I have seen. It looks WAY better. IMO anyway...
Here is a pic of a friend of mine...its altifron....
Steve - March 7, 2006 07:10 AM (GMT)
btw the spoltch means pretty much nothing. You cannot really ID them going by that.
cich1 - March 8, 2006 04:08 AM (GMT)
thanks fellas, yeah i pretty much knew that about the blotch, but hey i was grasping at straws i think.
i think time will tell what fish i actually have, from what i hear altifrons is rarely exported so that may be a long shot.
Wingsdlc - March 9, 2006 03:20 AM (GMT)

Seedy - March 12, 2006 02:30 AM (GMT)

cich1 - March 12, 2006 02:48 AM (GMT)

cich1 - March 13, 2006 12:42 AM (GMT)
more

Vip - March 13, 2006 06:08 AM (GMT)
whats the agression like? im looking at setting up a peaceful tank soon.
dtroup2 - March 13, 2006 06:20 AM (GMT)
Do they like to pair off or harem breed?
cich1 - March 13, 2006 05:12 PM (GMT)
the only aggression i have noticed was between eachother(amounts to alot of chasing not much else).
surinamensis will pair off and breed, but steindachneri i believe is a harem breeder.
