Title: Strange Pond Creature

Leema - March 11, 2006 01:49 AM (GMT)
So I did a waterchange in my pond today, and I sucked up this thing from the gravel. Any idea what it is? It's very cool. It moves like a rotifer... The only place for it to of come from is the pond plants I got from the nursery.

Ive never seen anything like this before, it may be some sort of insect that has layed eggs.

Ok...it is in the Phylum Platyhelminth...

Class is either Turbellaria or Trematoda...

Or I could be completely off....

It was about an inch long when it fully stretched out, but when 'relaxed' it would sit at about 1cm long. I've put it back in the pond now.
It was suggested it was a leech... :hmm: But I offered myself to it and it didn't bite, so I'm guessing not.

Seedy, I searched those two on Google, and got this... And I'm pretty sure this is what it is! Well done! :winner:

EDIT: Hmmm... But looking at this:

This creature would exist in this state inside my gut, not in my pond... Correct?

So I'm guess I'm going to have to keep seraching... Creepy!

Hi leema,

The life cycle that you posted looks like the life cycle of Schistasoma (spelling?)...anyway that is a disease causing parasite that lives in Africa/Asia...

There are many, many, many species in the family and classes I suggested, quite honestly, you will probably not be able to pin it down to a specific species...I suspect that the species you found was either a non-parasitic form of this creature, or has different hosts and vectors than Schisasomes do...

Good work Seeds. When I enlarged that image, my first reaction was leech. I wouldnt knw if it was parasitic to your specific pond fish, but most probably is. Best to watch your fishes health, and look for any external signs of them.

Unfortunately I put it back in the pond. :banghead: I should've taken it to my LFS to see what they reckon... They're very knowledgeable.

Thanks for your help guys. It was an interesting find and I watched it for ages.

The lifecycle was from a site about Clonorchis sinensis - but many would have the same life cycle.
