Title: Sponge filter?

Has anyone used sponge filters before? Wanting to know what you think of them. I am needing a internal filter of some sort for a 40gal with frogs and fish in it. I was thinking of trying a couple of sponge filters. Since I have a rather large air pump that I can use to supply it. Plus, their cheaper than internal filters. I thought if they work good then I might put them on a few other tanks that I have. Like my snail tank, so the baby snails won't get sucked up in the power filter.
So what is everyones experience with using sponge filters?

i use one in my 15 gallon hospital tank. i like it it does a good job, and is really easy to maintain.

Sponge filters are very effective for smaller volumes. They are the best choice for fish that are easily affected by currents, ie fry.

They just don't look like theres much to them. But, I am going to try a few out and see what I think. I can always get something diffrent later on if I don't care for them. I want to put one or two of them on my 40gal frog tank, one on my hospital tank, and one on my snail tank. That way I can use the extra power filters from those tanks to put on some of my bigger tanks that need more circlulation. Maybe it will cut down on so many water changes. Right now my heavy stocked tanks, I am having to clean once a week. agghhh, which is kind of costly when using the python.

They're great for biofiltration, lacking for mechanical filtration. I have plenty of them set up, running along with hob filters that are set up for mechanical filtration. This works well in heavily stocked breeding tanks.
Breeding setups with a central air system use them, run a pvc line behind the tanks, & hook up a filter to a valve. Pvc is easier to run than electric, sponges are cheaper tham power filters.
