Title: Bolivian rams
dtroup2 - March 25, 2006 06:35 AM (GMT)
Will more than 1 pair of Bolivian Rams breed in a 55 gal tank? I'm figuring on them being 1/3 of the fish population.
Any other info on them would be appreciated as well.

Been drinking there dtroup? :hmm: As the name (Bolivian) implies, these are New World Cichlids...moved....

Hey now, I never claimed to know cichlids, or geography for that matter
Now you can see why I'm asking questions.
So what can you tell me about them???

If you use plants and rocks and seperate the tank into territories, I'm sure it could work out. :) But I'm not sure how aggression would play out.

honestyly....I don't know too much about them except that they are one of the more peaceful dwarf cichlids...
Microgeophagus is the genus name...I think ramzerii is the species name...never kept them though...

If they're anything like blue rams, having a pair in a 55 gal wouldn't phase them. :) I'd do it.

I did some researching on the web and found a post by a guy who claimes that he had 2 breeding pair in the same tank and that they were ok. He said that they spawned on alternate weeks so he had fry every 2 weeks or so, but he didn't say how big the tank was.

Break up the territory to reduce line of site and add some dithers.

They will be in the Endler tank, will that work as dithers?
I'm planning on plants, driftwood and rockwork. Should I do 2 rock formations with the plants in the middle?
I've read conflicting information as to their parenting skills, some say they are good parents others say they eat the fry. Which is more accurate?
ShadowElite951 - March 26, 2006 01:38 AM (GMT)
Overall...they are very bad parents and the fry are hard to raise.
wooly526 - March 26, 2006 07:53 AM (GMT)
I would have to disagree with Bolivians being bad parents, ok my pair did eat their eggs the first three times but fourth spawn was successful. They acted as typical cichlid parents ( don't come near me or babies or :guns: :guns: )
Anyways once the fry were about 10 days old i did have to move them because the father ate a few, but i was still happy with the mothers guarding instincts and moved her as well as the fry to my 15g. I don't think it was entirely necessary to leave them with the mother but i do believe in a more natural up bringing and therefore left them together.
Geez they grew slowly though, feeding BBS and micro flakes it took about 5 months for them to reach an inch, only about 20 made it this size and were takin to my LFS.

mikrogeophagus altispinosus is the bolivian ram.
mikrogeophagus ramirezi is the blue ram. :drunk:
i would think that 2 pairs would be okay in a 55 as long as like glaive said you set up territories and obstacles to reduce line of sight.
glaive - March 27, 2006 04:27 PM (GMT)
Oh and endlers should make good dithers I would think.
champb21 - March 4, 2007 06:25 AM (GMT)
not to interrupt sorry but i would like some endlers if your selling also would Bolivian ram pair be able to go in 10 gallon? :thanks:
glaive - March 4, 2007 06:22 PM (GMT)
I would try for at least a 20 gallon for a pair.
cich1 - March 5, 2007 03:50 AM (GMT)
i agree with Glaive, a 20 gallon tank would be the best route to go for a pair.

I may be unloading my Endlers, their bloodline may be tainted, in which case I have to start over with fresh stock.
Where are you located, I'm in MN so shipping would be tricky with the temps below freezing.
The Rams have been put on hold for a while, moving across country means that I have to unload some fish and Hubby would :gun: KILL me if I got more fish at the moment! :bitchslap:
