Cant tell from those pix.
What camera are you using?
Cichlas - March 26, 2006 10:20 PM (GMT)
Well done Shadow, They are Acestrorhynchus falcirostris, also known as Dog characin, Amazon cachorro or Freshwater barracuda. They are about 2.5 inches at the moment.
Steve, the camera is a Minolta 5D.

Very cool! How big do they get? I'm assuming based on the teeth that they are a predator....

Cool pics! How big will those things get? From the pics of their teeth it looks like your fingers will be in danger within a year or so.

The freshwater barracuda can reach aound 12" in the home aquarium, 16" in the wild. They are strictly carniverous and young can be trained to take dead stuff but adults will invariably only take live food. The LFS said they were eating bloodworms but they didn't take any the first day in my tank. Will have to see how they go over the next week or so and may need to try something else if they refuse to eat. They are best kept as a species tank but should be OK with anything that is too large to be seen as food and nothing that is likely to bully them. They originate in the amazon basin, Orinoco and guyana so appreciate a PH of 7 or less. They have not been know to breed in captivity. The ones I have are somewhere around 2" so have plenty of growing to do and are currently living with my water cow goby (Eleotris vittata).

Yay! I was right! jay
I always wanted to get about 5 freshwater barracudas...They stock huge amounts of them at my LFS. But I haven't gotten my 125-150 gallon tank yet. :D
