Title: POP EYE
Description: POP EYE
alergic__1 - March 27, 2006 02:37 PM (GMT)
ok....so I have never ever encounted a problem with pop eye....dont really know too much about it except that it could be caused by injury OR stress.....my TinFoil Barb has pop eye on his left eye......he doesnt "play" with my other tinfoil at all like he used to....he just sits in the corner of the tank all by hiself anf rarely leaves the spot....
what can I do other than extra water changes? I have completed two 50% water changes the past week....
*should I remove him from the tank and put him by himself until it goes away?
* can it spread to my other fish?
:?:

atleast I think it is "pop eye" .....it's not really the eye ball it self popping out....it's more like well I think it looks like a "bubble" on the eye ball....like where the pupil is....

How long has the tank been setup, that's nitrite and a cycled tank will not read any of it.
alergic__1 - March 27, 2006 11:38 PM (GMT)
I have had the tank set up for almost a year now....what do you mean about the nitrites thing??
alergic__1 - March 27, 2006 11:39 PM (GMT)
sorry...I know what you mean....ummm maybe it could have to do with me doing a 50% water change the other day??? I am not sure ?
glaive - March 28, 2006 04:48 AM (GMT)
Hmmm test might be off a hair. What is your nitrate/ NO3?
alergic__1 - March 28, 2006 06:57 PM (GMT)
*blush*......I dont test for nitrates....i was told by some people that it IS important to test for....then others that it IS NOT important to test for....I had the kit in my hand at the pet store....and he (the worker) convinced me that it IS NOT important....so I put it back....
glaive - March 29, 2006 04:07 AM (GMT)
It's not terribly important, try this have the LFS check your water for you to be sure your tests are good. How is he now?
alergic__1 - March 29, 2006 08:02 PM (GMT)
he seems to be doing a lot better....he always ate though....now he is swimming around a lot more.....I can still see the "bubble" on his eye though :0(

If the situation is not gettingany worse I personally would leave him be. If it how ever appears to be getting even a little worse I would look into medicating him, if possible this should be done in a hospital tank.

How long do you think I should wait before I treat him....I mean....can pop eye hurt him in anyways? Can he lose his sight in the eye?
I dont know when I am going to a pet store again ..... all the pet stores around me are like 45 mins away haha.....I'll do another water test myself
do you think I should get a test kit for nitrates?
Black_Angel - March 31, 2006 11:47 PM (GMT)
An ammonia test as well as nitrates is a good idea as high levels of nitrate can affect a fish also.
Can you get a pic of the fish at all?
Maybe he got bit there by the other fish or its bacterial.
If it was popeye, the whole eye would stand out from the fishes head.
alergic__1 - April 1, 2006 07:35 PM (GMT)
ok....I took about 50 pics because he moves too much now haha
and these are the bes that I could get:

From what i can see its not popeye, but there is a grey area over the lens which can mean several things from bacterial to hitting it on something.
Make sure the water is in good condition and do regular water changes with a gravel vac as well.

Alrighty sounds good.....that is what i was told by glaive...I always test for ammonia....just I didnt know if it was really important to test for nitrates....
so ummm it doesnt really look grey.....but kind of a little off-white....and like a bubble.....
so you dont think it is seriously enough that I should remove him from the tank he is in now?
After looking at him today....I believe that it is clearing up!
I have a question.....i think that I read something about feeding my fish "veggie rounds" or well just veggie things....that the organics in the water can be harmful to the fish.....???? or something like that haha..Would that be true? If I tested for nitrates would that tell me anything to do with organic stuff ??

What exactly are you refering to here? If it is a commercially prepaired food it should be ok, if you are feeding fresh veggies it is reccomended that you "par boil" the veggies and remove any uneaten food after about 10 min so that it doesn't foul the water, par boiling should kill anything on the veggies.
Hope this helps.

ok so yeah I do feed 3 of my fish peas and lettuce, apples.....they always eat them right up when I put them in....
I dont really remember what I was talking about then haha
but yeah....I knew that you should remove the left overs that arent eaten....I usually dont put much for food in anyways.... :0) So it's all good hehe
