Title: Another dumb sump question
Description: working on making it quieter

Ok, My next question is ...............
The water going into the sump tank on most of the sumps I have found on-line go through a "spray bar" into the drip plate. Is the spray bar absolutly nessesary, or can I just have a steady stream going into a deep drip pan?
I also hope to have the water returning to the tank a steady flow instead of dripping or spraying. I will have bubble stones, probably 2 or 3 @ 6 or 12 inches each, to break the surface tension for gas exchange.
Hubby has agreed to let me put my tank up in the living/bedroom area if it is quiet enough so the less falling water the better.

Should be fine streaming to the drip plate, just watch for splash.
You can return with out a spray bar. Assuming you made a wet dry then you will have no need for further gas exchange, it should already be insane. If you did want to promote gas exchange the best place would be at the bottom of your bio tower in the sump.

that's the way i have mine returning. it just dumps into the drip pan via the 1 inch pvc and gravity.:D

I havn't bulit it yet but I plan on doing it like the diagram Glaive drew up that Cich 1 shared with me.
How tall should the bio tower be?
I'll probably have the bubble stones anyway 'cause I like bubbles.

I have it streaming into the sump and a spray bar into the tank. Seems to work fine. ;)

Nothing wrong with bubbles they serve multiple purposes.
What type of 20 gallon are you using for your sump, or what are the dimensions so far?

I don't have one yet, that's part of why I ask about the tower size, so I can make sure I get one big enough.

Remember a tower can always be extended with pvc. I have also heard of good results with rubbermaid containers.
As for height, high enough that half your media can be above the water line? This would promote the wet/dry mass gas exchange. Maybe a 18-25 gallon container? If the container was too high it might need support though. Cich will chime in soon.

yeah the way i have mine setup the tower is contained in the tank thus limiting the height of my tower. if i had it to do over i would use an open top tank and have the tower raised so at least half the media would be out of water. as it is right now my bio media is mostly submerged with the top 1 inch of rock above the water line. it works fine though i haven't had a problem with it.
