I think in the wild they can average anywhere between 10-20 inches, with the world record being 11 pounds, 15 ounces. They are an awesome gamefish, similar to the largemouth bass. The smallmouth will fight much harder than a largemouth of similar size however, and jumps out of the water like crazy when hooked.

i have a spot on the Youghiogheny River that from late april to mid june you can see a 8"- 14"smallmouth defending his territory every 8 feet. the water is clear and shallow, and if you cast anything near ones nest they snatch it right up, not because they want to eat it, but because the don't want it there. it's kind of unfair, but i release them immediatly

Here is a pic of my best small mouth bass. They are sweet fish. I bet they would be sweet to keep. Right now I have a warmouth in a 50 gal. They are much like a rock bass with more of a green color.

I am keeping a warmouth right now. I used to have some bluegills with him but he didn't like them. Anything else I might try? He is in a 50 gal.
