Title: mean betta
Rob&Tara - April 4, 2006 02:17 AM (GMT)
ok we have had our betta in a community tank with 5 neon tetras and 5 zebra danios.
hes been with them for maybe 2 weeks. he never chased them or showed ill will against them, we used to feed them 3 times a day, then learned that 3 times was too much so we went to once a day.
ever since he has started getting nasty with the tetras, doesnt seem to go after the danios.
whats his deal? why the sudden change?

In the world of fish there is a rule "If you can fit in my mouth, you will"
I had neons dissapear when they were with my daughter's betta and my pleco.
If the betta didn't chace them when you were feeding 3 times a day but are now that you are feeding once a day you might go up to 2 times a day, he is probably still hungry and neons look like food to him, fast food but food none the less.

and if that doesn't work try going back up to 3 times a day, but make them real light feedings.

He's probably trying to establish a little territory.

Bettas see brightly colored fish as threats, therefore you can't really keep them with guppies, tetras or other brightly colored fish. Zebra danios are dull colored and they are easy to keep with bettas because the betta doesn't see them as a threat, providing, of course, that you have them in at least a 20 gallon tank. Zebra danios really shouldn't be kept in anything smaller.

petsmart recommened at least a 10 gallon, they seem to be fine. :hmm:
what is going to happen to them if they are in a 10 gallon? there are only 5.

Unfortunately many pet stores give inaccurate advice. I'm not sure how this forum feels about posting links to other forums, so I won't do that, but a few sites that you might want to check out are:
danios.odd-fish.net - recommends a tank at least 24" long for zebra danios, and I don't know of any 10 gallons that meet that requirement.
mongabay.com - reccommends 20 -25 gallon minimum
petsolutions.com - recommends at least 25 gallons
aquariacentral.com - recommends at least a 20 gallon.
If they are kept in smaller tanks they don't really have the swimming room they need without constantly having to turn. This can make them become stressed and nippy.
