As far a choice goes there seems to be dozens of canisters on the market, but it really comes down to how much you are willing to spend and what u expect for your money.

I currently run 2 eheim ecco canisters on my 4ft, ive had them for almost 3 years and touch wood have not had a single issue at all with them, in saying that they werent cheap and can be a bit annoying to clean.

Personally i wouldnt go past an eheim or a fluval, mainly due to their excellent build quality ( you get what you pay for )

Also check out Aquatic Life Aquariums they currently are offering big discounts on most of their range and are a very fast and reliable store jay

Thanks alot mate, i'll check them out.

Why do you run two on your 4ft and not one bigger one? (out of interest).

oh yeah, which is better..... eheim or fluval???? :hmm:

I'm using all pro-aqua's that in Aust. are about a third the price of fluvals for a similar sized filter with similar or larger output. You'll find fluval, eheim etc. really expensive in Aust compared to the U.S where these are common filters. We have a wide range of chinese manufactured filters though and if you purchase the right brands some are quite good. The Resun is not a bad brand.

I'm thinking i'll go with the fluval 205.

A good choice for my planted?

I have a 204 as one of my filters on my 55 and it does well.

There are a few reasons why i run 2 canisters, mainly for the comfort in knowing that if one of them breaks down while i'm not home the other one will still be running and i wont have a tank full of death when i get home

Also when you have to clean and replace filter media you will lose alot of beneficial bacteria and be susceptible to ammonia and nitrate spikes ( I'm sure you will come upon these issues soon  ) so by running 2 filters or more you have the flexibility of cleaning and maintaining them at separate times as to not wipe out all your good bacteria buddy's .

I went an picked up a Fluval 205 down melbourne on the weekend.

It was extremely easy to set up and is so quite compared to that other thing i had!

so far so good =)

@wooly. Are your two filters, 2 smaller sized ones to equal your tanks capasity or are they 2 that each equal your tanks cap? :hmm:

I have a OTTO 450g cannister filter and its pretty good, cost $199 at the LFS, and was relatively easy to get setup right for my fish tank minus the hood alteration i had to do.
