Common Name: Blue Gourami, Gold Gourami (Colour morph), Opaline gourami, Three spot gourami.

Scientific Name: Trichogaster trichopterus

Family: Belontiidae

Maximum Size: 4" (10cm)

Sociability:Very social and active fish. Males have been known to be aggresive towards other members of the tank. Try to keep a Male to female ratio of around 1 male : 2 Females.

Minimum Tank size: A pair will be fine in a heavily planted 2ft tank (20-30 gallons).

pH: 6.5-7.5

Temperature: 24-28 degrees C (76-80 degrees F)

Sexing: Males show longer, pointier dorsal fin and the female appears more plump around the mid section and breast area prior to breeding.

Breeding: Bubblenest bulider. Once the nest has been built the male will entice the female underneath the nest and both begin the breeding embrace. Once the femal has signalled to the male she is ready by biting his back, the male and female begin to spawn. Once spawning is complete the female should be captured and removed from the tank to stop aggresive behavour. Spawning may occur several times one after another.

As with the Pearl gourami, the male will then take charge of caring for the eggs. After about 30 hours the fry will have hatched and the male should be removed. Feed the fry liquid food or infusoria culture several times a day. Freshly hatched (or frozen) brine shrimp may be offered at about two weeks of age. Fine flake foods may be offered once they are approximately 4 weeks of age. Water changes should be performed every two to three days.

Care Level: Easy. Good for Beginers.

Care: Provide frequent water changes and keep water and food quality high and you will be awarded with vibrant colours. Much deaper blues when breeding.

Aquarium: Provide plenty of plant cover, including floating plants, and plenty of shaded areas.

Feeding: Omnivorous. Will take frozen, live and flake food. They love live mosquito larvae (clean well before adding to your tank) and small garden worms and even eat algae tabs.
