I am setting up the 55 gal and I put 1 seeded sponge filter in it about a week ago.
I am getting ready to put another sponge filter in it but I need to know if I need to seed it before I put it in.
I have some little sponges in the 10 gal that are seeded and I think it's finally cycled, with the first sponge filter for the 55 I used one of the small sponges from the 10, do I need to do this with the second sponge filter for the 55? I know that the 55 is not done cycling, I'm not even sure if I have enough of a bio load in it to cycle it, there are 3 kuhli loaches in it and I have been over feeding it on purpose to help the cycle along.
Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated,
thanks
i would think if you just planned on adding a second sponge to the tank then no, you would not need to worry about seeding it. but if you were to replace the first one with this new one then i would seed it first.
Just toss the new sponge filter in & let it run. A trick to get them to mature a little faster is to put some mature gravel from a cycled tank on top of the sponge. This will help transfer some of the nitrifying bacteria from the gravel to the sponge as the sponge pulls water through the gravel. It's similar to putting some cycled filter media in a new filter to give it a jump start.
Thanks guys! I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to cause a setback in the cycling of the big tank.
I would rather not remove one of the little sponges, one has only been in action for 1 week so I don't know how strong a colony it has (it's stacked under the aged one) and if it's not sttrong enough it won't do any good by itself in either tank.
