Title: hmmm, i wonder whats going on w/ my crypts.

FBG - May 25, 2006 12:26 AM (GMT)
hmmmm....i hae had some crypts for about 4 months now, in my 40 gallon, and they have never grown, never produced plantlets, and never got crypt rot, in my 50 gallon, i have a lot of crypts, and they have produced a lot of new leaves, and some plantlets, but, nothing in my 40 gallon, only one has grown, and i have no idea what it is called. has any one ever heard of this? i am usually very good w/ plants, and i have never heard of this, i mean, i have, but crypts in my view, have not needed much nutrients, at least in my 50 gallon, i don't fert it much. but, like i said, i don't really know what is going on.

so, thanks in advanced.

Is your lighting any different? It could be that or the amount of firts in the water...:)

it is only off by .3 WPG, i'll add more ferts tomorrow when i am actually awake.......:)

have a good one.

sorry for this dumb question but how do you work out WPG?? :dunno:

FBG - May 25, 2006 07:55 PM (GMT)
i beleive you divide the watts of your bulbs put togather (if you have more than one that is) times the size of your aquarium. so, i have 80 watts, divided by 50 so
80/50= 1.30, take off the extra zero, and you have 1.3 WPG on a 50 gallon aquarium. thats the way i was told to find out.

Yep that's the equation.

That is correct, but NOTE this; if you have, for example, one 30W fluorescent tube over the tank, it will not give you the whole 30W without the reflector. Without reflectors bulbs/tubes give only approx. 65% of their strength. So, if you would like that your lights perform 100%, go with reflectors. TIP; I use kitchen alu tin foil and I change it every month, since the evaporated water leaves minerals behind and makes the reflector less effective.

Kind regards, Dusko.

You should also remember that for example, two 30 watt bulbs do not give the "same" light as one 60 watt bulb. Although you have the same wattage, you do not have the same intensity. You therefore may have a slight trade off, the two lamps will give a more even light, but it will not be as intense as the single lamp for some higher light level plants.

That flower stalk looks exactly like the ones on my Aponogetin plants.

FBG - July 24, 2006 03:19 PM (GMT)
lol, i pulled off the stalk, on both of the plants, and they sprouted 2 stalks each.

should i do any thing with pollinating the flowers, or does that matter?

dtroup - July 24, 2006 11:15 PM (GMT)
On my flower stalks I simply press the two together lightly, I don't know if it works or not because it hasn't been long enough to tell, I also read on line that you can use a small paint brush to lightly brush each stalk to polinate them.
Good luck.
