Title: Major issue with minor infestation
Description: help

dtroup2 - May 28, 2006 03:28 AM (GMT)
I recently discovered a minor infestation of fleas, I think they came with some used carpet, I want to take care of it before it becomes a major infestation.
I bought some Hartz 3 in 1 Home Spray to kill them BUT the lable says to cover fish tanks and remove birds and leave the room for at least 1 hour, this isn't a problem as far as the tanks go but what do I do about Patches (Dude's guinea pig)?
And how do I prevent Patches from getting fleas?

Has anyone ever had to deal with a small mammal and flea prevention, and I mean small, he might weigh 1 1/2 - 2 pounds.

Bum bum bummmm.. the fleas...

i think the main "insecticide ingredient" is called pyrethrin...

any flea medication that has this (any product suitable for cats) is apparently safe to use on the Pig...

Id call a vet to double check... and apparently fleas goes through stages, so i think different treatments are needed?
and as for cleaning the carpets (and Dude)

check this site out:

I had a 6 pound yorkie that had fleas 20 years ago. Got some stuff from the vet, had to spray the whole house. Whatever it was, it worked.

The house spray I bought has Permethrin and Methoprene.
I also got some Hartz advanced care 3 in 1 flea and tick drops for dude, he has a flea coller on that is only a month old but I am going to use the drops on him instead. He doesn't seem to be heavily infested, I've only seen him acting like he got bit a couple of times so hopefully I can get them gone before they get bad, the drops also have phenothrin in them.

Thanks for the links!
