Title: treating swim bladder infection
Description: in a 20 gal community
Salomon - June 14, 2006 01:00 AM (GMT)
two of our flame tetras (in a 20 gal community tank) were having difficulty swimming, which my boyfriend (salomon) & i attributed to injured swim bladders. after losing one, we discovered another had developed a problem. due to the fact that this fish was fine before, we've decided injury isn't a likely cause. now we're thinking it's a bacterial infection and have dosed the tank with jungle fungus clear. we unfortunately don't have a hopsital tank for them, so the rest of the fish will be being treated for an infection they don't seem to have. this shouldn't have any negative impact on the other fish in the tank, should it? (the other inhabitants are 4 zebra danios, 3 cories, and 4 healthy flame tetras)

If it is bacterial I don't think jungle fungus clear will do much good because funji and bacteria are two different critters and respond to different medications.
I will let someone with more expertice tell you which meds are best for bacterial infections.

the box says:
"FUNGUS CLEAR treats a variety of fungus and bacteria-related conditions on tropical fish and Goldfish including:"
<insert some pictures of fungus; tail, fin, or mouth rot; hemorrhagic septicemia; glamped fins; and dropsy here>
"Also clears furunculosis (open red sores), eye cloud (white hazy film on eyes), pop eye (enlarged eyes), swim bladder disease (fish swims on side or upside down)."
based on that information, we figured it might do some good

Ok, it sounds like a cure all, I thought it was just for fungus. It sounds like it should work, good luck. I hope it works for you.

thank you. i probably should have mentioned that it treats bacteria as well...the name is a bit deceiving.

How is it going so far? I would love a write up and a day to day basis, that would be cool

unfortunately the tank is at my boyfriend's house :( i wish i had a tank here...all i have is little walter the betta & his 5.5 gal...but anyway, i'll see if he can keep you posted. the two affected were in pretty bad shape. one ended up laying on the ground a good portion of the time (i think it's going to be too late for this guy...*sad*). the other wasn't quite so bad, but things weren't looking good. i haven't been back since we medicated the tank and won't get a chance to visit until saturday, so i hope all is going well...

so far we've had no luck. we re-dosed the tank tonight and are about to put the worst one down. we had him isolated in a net (just resting at the top of the tank) to prevent the other fish from chewing off his tail. unfortunately, someone must have bumped it and he fell into the main tank where he lost his tail :( the other affected tetra can only attempt to swim vertically and his spine appears to have bent, perhaps as a result of his efforts? do you think there's any hope for the little guy? if after this second round of meds he still isn't improving, he'll definately be put to sleep, but we made decide to do it sooner...
