Title: stocking question
Description: Bala compatability

dtroup2 - June 25, 2006 10:28 PM (GMT)
I need to know the size of the biggest fish a full grown Bala shark can eat is.
I want to do some kind of cichlid but I don't want the Bala to eat them when he gets bigger.
I checked out Cichlas picture of his but I cant tell how big it's mouth is.
So what size, in inches please, is the smallest fish I can put in with him, and expect it to survive?

I've never seen my balas try to take anything that is alive of any appreciable size. However I wouldn't trust mine with anything too small. I can't say with any conviction what size though. All I can say is that they can suck bigger food than you think into what seems like quite a small mouth. Mine easily eat whole cockles and prawns (peeled), and the whitebait/smelt they can manage I would say were anywhere upto 2.5"-3".

Thank you.
I guess I will look at 4-6 inch cichlids.

The whitebait/smelt are a very slim fish so I would think pretty much any cichlid would be ok.
