Right now they are in 1 gallon tanks,but I'm going to upgrade to 2.5 gal.tanks next weekend.

Cool! Glad to hear that you are giving them some room to exercize.
It doesn't hurt to give them an air stone, I've had a couple that loved to play in the bubbles.

Maybe in the larger tanks.In the one gallon tanks air stones proved to be a hassle,very messy,and the VT did'nt like it because he could'nt build his bubble nest.I like for them to have the room,one reason I'm getting larger tanks.The other reason is that they'll have some filtration and it'll be much safer using mini-heaters this winter.

One of mine was in a 30gal long so he had an area of the surface that wasn't disturbed for his bubble nest. Mom's was in a 1 gal widemouth, but he was sickly and almost 6 yrs old when she rescued him from a friend, he only lasted a couple of months and never did build a nest.

They usually stop building nests as they get older and 6 years is ANCIENT for bettas.

That's what I thought which is why I wasn't surprised when we lost him a few months after we rescued him. The woman who had him was very ill and hadn't changed his water in a long time, he was in 1/2 of one of those quart sized divided betta keepers and the water was a slimy green. :green: She was threatening to flush him alive. :bitchslap:
