Title: List I found online
Description: for 55 gal
dtroup2 - July 9, 2006 07:54 AM (GMT)
I found this list online, these fish are supposed to be able to live in a 55 gal and not kill each other. Does it sound accurate?
1 trio Protomelas
1 trio Aulonocara
1 trio Copadichromis
1 trio Labidochromis or Cynotilapia
4 Neolamprologus (larger species)
2 Eretmodus or 1 trio Haplochromis
2 Julidochromis (larger species)
1 Synodontis Catfish
1 medium sized Plecostomus

Uh oh...Looks like the "Cichlid Recipe" strikes again...I'm really getting tired of correcting that guys mistakes....
dtroup, There are a lot of issues with that mix...the first one being that is too many fish...also, some diet issues there too...A lot of the Protomelas species get up to a solid 6 inches too...I'll comment more on it later...I just got back from the lake and am all tuckered out...

That's what I thought.
I was doing research on the list, checking out each fish, and to start with I can't see having that many fish in a 55, I just can't see 22 medium sized fish in a 55gal tank, I could see it if they were all under 2 inches as adults but not when some of them are 6+ inches. I also noticed that there were herbavores in with the omnivores and carnivores. I remember reading somewhere that the herbavores will get bloat if given protine rich diets.
I'm glad I asked about the list and did some research on it, I only got through about 1/2 of the list before I gave up and decided to ask about it in here. It just didn't make sence to me.
My intention is to KEEP fish not produce a gladiator arena and hope that a few survive.
Is his information on the different species even close to accurate? As to fish size, min tank size, diet, etc, or should I just forget that I even clicked on that link?

If you are on the sight I suspect you are on (The Cichlid Recipe) most of their species info is OK...but their "recipes" are seriously flawed...
Here's a quick "run-down" of sites you will find while "googling" different Cichlid species.....Mongo Bay is really bad (Although I've submitted a few suggestions and revisions that were responded to quite enthusiasticly)
The "hyphenated" Cichlid Forum genneraly has good info on species....I'm not sure about their "recipes"...Malawi Mayhem also has good species profiles....GCCA and ACA are good and The Cichlid Room Companion is by far the best source of Cichlid info on the web...

Yep you were right about where I was.
I'll do some more research on the other sites you reccomended.
BTW I got that link from that other place you reccomended so you might want to mention it to them.

Where was it recomended? I've gone round and round with people about that dang webpage...They also have a compatibility chart that gets recommended a lot that I really don't like...

Just a thought Dtroup, goes same as it would for a newb, why don't you search through pictures of different cichlids and when you find the one you want to build around create a topic. Then the collective hive can help you work out tank mates and what not.
