Title: Just how much space do your cichlids take up???
Vip - July 11, 2006 07:33 AM (GMT)
Some people say a Red Devil needs at least 75g to himself, I say bullshit, mine takes up 100g as well as my Oscar, and no matter what they wont let any other fish in that tank at all! The only reason the Blood Parrot is with the Oscar now is because she bashing him up!
I remember once Steve said to me that he hates cichlids because if the tank space they take up, im now starting to agree with him, not that I would stop keeping them though.
Anyone ever had bad territory issues with cichlids? sometimes it just drives you nuts!

So what's the deal?
Did you put the RD in to teach the Oscar a lesson or what?

I would only keep cichlids such as RD in single display tanks...I think they look better that way.
I find that oscars are quite compatible with other fish though...I have a pussy oscar in with a lot of my rare stuff that I grow out and im really not afraid of him attaking any of them.
My pbass will only eat stuff that can fit in their mouths...so if tank mates are big enough they will leave them alone. Having said that pbass need at least 300g anyways because of the size they obtain...

my 150 has my juvie jd, gold saum, oscar, a couple plecos and my silverdollars in there. everything s cool besides the occassional spat between the oscar and saum. when the jd matures and starts putting on some size i think everything will probably go pear shaped.

I have 3 RD's in 3 different tanks and they are getting punked each and every one of them. One by a Green Saum, one by a Jack Dempsey and the other by an Oscar and an ufermanni. Now, when I had them together in the same tank, it was a constant battle between them, but now that they are seperated, they are wimps!

It is best to keep the larger Amphilophus species by themselves or breeding pair.
Even pairs play rough and might look just as bad as they would in community setting. :bash:
