Title: I'm loosing a corrie
dtroup2 - July 12, 2006 05:57 AM (GMT)
One of my green corries is extreemly bloated and already to the point of pineconing. He is also very faded, almost white. He didn't even try to run when I netted him.
I have isolated him in a 1gal betta hex with 1/2 tank water and 1/2 fresh dechlorinated water with air.
My water stats were as of yesterday
Ph 7.8
Nitrite .1
Nitrate 5.0
Ammonia .25
He was in my 10 gal planted Endler tank, everyone elce in the tank seems to be fine including the other corrie. Here is a pic of him, it's not the best quality but it's better than none.

Is those readings from the 10 gal or from the small tank with the cory. Which ever sounds like you need to do some water changes often as you are poisening the fish with nitrite and ammonia.
Sounds like the cory has dropsy and there really isn't much you can do about it. Just keep him comfortable or euthenize him. Most of the time dropsy is caused by poor water conditions so please do more water changes on the tanks to keep them healthy and once a week give them a feeding of blanched peas to help keep their digestive tracts cleaned out and you shouldn't have anymore of these kind of problems.

The stats are from the 10 gal he was in. I got behind a few of days on my water changes but I did 50% change last night. I usually do 30-50% on the 10 gal and 25-40% on the 55 gal weekly, I think that the tanks aren't done cycling, all they have right now is sponge filters but I got some "dirty" gravel from a friend to jump start the cycle as well as a "filter swish" from the store where I got the Kuhlis.
He is still hanging in there today in the 1 gal.
I've been having issues because my water has .25ppm ammonia streight from the tap. I even tested the water in my rain barrel and it's ammonia is the same, I don't know if the test is bad or if I'm doing somthing wrong or what, I have been doing the test exactly according to the directions and the kit doesn't expire until next spring.
Here is my journal for this tank

Awww...sorry to hear :(
What are you feeding him? Not only is dropsy caused by bad water quality...it's also caused by feeding him poor fish food. But as susan said, you can't really do anything about it...the bloat in dropsy is usually caused by fluid coming out of the kidneys. =(
Oh...btw...if you say you do 40-50% water changes weekly on your tanks...you could be knocking out your bio filter. Removing that much water can stop the bio filter and kill it off...that's probably why your nitrates and ammonia are still present. Keep your water changes down to 10-20/30% a week and 40-50% once/twice a month or every other month untill your tank is fully mature...that should help. =)

:rip: He's gone.
They all get
Tetra fin goldfish flake-crushed
Wardly shrimp pellets-5 per day
Hikari Tropical algae wafers-1/2 wafer broken into 3-4 pieces
and Fishes choice freeze dried blood worms-8-12
Up until the 3rd they were getting this twice a day but there was usually food left over so I went to feeding once a day.
Unfortunatly my tap water has ammonia in it so water changes can only take out the nitrate and nitrite but the ammonia is staying the same.
If you look at the link in my earlier post you can see the progress of this tank and it's stats and water changes.
I have removed 2 adult ELB's and 2 of the older fry to my other 10gal tank which has a seeded sponge filter from my 55gal, I'm trying some line breeding, so the bioload is down by 3 adults and 2 medium size fry.

:rip: little cory :( Sorry to hear
It seems you are feeding your fish to much protein. The shrimp and blood worms and quite possibly the goldfish food contain a lot of protien. You can still feed your fish what you are feeding now (it's really quite good for them) but lower the amount feed if any problems continue and/or other fish get dropsy.
Add a healthy clump of hornwort too...it lowers ammonia levels. ;)

Sorry about the cory.I have ammonia problems with my tap water to.I use AmQuel plus,it works real well on ammonia and nitrates.
