Title: Corys too hot?
rgw187 - July 18, 2006 07:18 PM (GMT)
I live in an area of the North Cal coast where an A.C. has hardly ever been needed.Lately though,we have been suffering a heatwave that is driveing my tank tempatures in the upper 80's. The only time I see my corys now is in the early morning and late evening. The rest of the time they are hiding in their caves. Is this because of the temp. and is the tempature getting to dangerously high?

95 is usually the extreame limit that most fish can handle. Are any fish gasping at the surface or breathing heavily?

Leave your lights off during the hot part of the day and only turn them on in the mornings and evenings for awhile. You can also freeze bottles of water and float them in the tank or lay them across the filter where the water runs out if you have an hob that way it will cool the water as its going in the tank. Also add some airstones for extra water movement. If you do have an hob lower your water level to where the outflow of the filter is causing more of a splash. This will help.
We are having the same heat wave here in OKlahoma.

My cories are in a tank that gets up to 95F in summer, and they don't seem to bother over it. :)
However, if you're worried, cories like cold water changes. ;)

Plus a nice cold water change might trigger breeding, and even though the heat wave is kinda over now, the next time it comes around and your cories breed from a nice cold water change, and they breed, the fry will grow quicker from high tempeatures, and have little critters swimming around in a month

Hi Not quite the question that you are asking but I actually have peppered catfish in my indoor coldwater tank. I originally must have put plants in there from my tropical aquariums which must have been eggs on and hatched. Room temperature is usually just under to the bottom range of tropical temperatures. Hey they are quite happy and still breed like rabbits (sorry). During our very hot spell I was dropping large blocks of ice in the aquarium, I had obviously treated the water before freezing it.
