Supposedly, fairly easily...
Spawining mops are usually recomended, but I'm just going to leave the eggs and fry "in tank" and see if the fry can make it on their own...I also have a 6 gallon hex full of daphnia and worms...If they really get to egg laying, I will get a mop and let them lay some eggs, then just transfer the mop over to the hex....
Thanks for the compliments...

shit man they are amazing! :o You going to breed them?
glaive - August 4, 2006 09:54 AM (GMT)
He is certainly pulling out all the visual stops for his ladies! I am certain given time CD will have fry on his hands.
Any one who puts a male and female cichlid of the same species is wittingly or unwittingly attempting to breed them. ;)

Nice buy! I suspect that breeding will not be a problem. I found that killies are pretty well as easy to breed as their cousins the live-bearing toothcarps. I of course am referring to swords, plattys, guppies, mollies, etc. I think you are going to get alot of enjoyment out of this group as the pictures have already shown.
Nice job and don't forget to keep us posted when you get eggs.

Update:
I've split up the two pairs, with the younger pair going into a heavily planted 5 gallon Eclipse. The smaller tank has one spawning mop, while the larger 20 gallon has two hanging, and one floating from a fishing bobber. I've also set up another 5 bowfront Eclipse that I've started some Aponogeton bulbs.
About 3 weeks ago my Wife found fry swimming in the duckweed in the larger tank. I have begun checking the spawning mops for eggs. So far I have found 9 eggs. Four have hatched, 3 are still eggs, I accidently dropped one back into the tank and one egg died...There are also between 6-12 fry in the 20 gallon itself. I have added floating plastic "spawning grass" for the fry in the main tank to hide.
Pics to come later...

Have you considered using spawning mops?
Also, do you have a lot of floating plants and things for the fry to hide in?

Killer killies! You better breed them. If not you'll only get to enjoy them for a year or so. If I'm not mistaken they only live for a year or so.
FBG - September 14, 2006 04:42 AM (GMT)
no, not really, i have a little bit of java moss, but that is all that they could hide in....but, it isn't much, lol.

Depends on the species....these are semi-annual and can live for 2-3 years or more in captivity.
...and yeah the breedings coming along...
