Common name: Dwarf Gourami

Scientific name: Colisa Laila

Family: Belontiidae

Maximum size: 1-2" (4-6cm's)

Sociability: The dwarf gourami is normally quite peaceful, however there has been rogue cases of harassment and bullying from individual males. try to keep 1 mae to every two or three females.

Minimum Tank size: A pair will do fine in 15-20 gallons. However more specimens can be kept in larger aquariums.

pH: 6.0-7.5

Temperature: 22-28 degrees C (72-82 degrees F)

Sexing: Males are generally larger than females, with pronounced dep red and orange colours covering their bodies, seperated by light blue stipes running vertically up and down their bodies. The dorsal fin on the male is pointy, whereas on the female it is more rounded. Females remain a dull grey/blue colour throughout their lives.

Breeding: Difficult. Prior to breeding the pair should be conditioned by feeding them live or frozen brine shrimp and blood or black worms. Water in the breeding tank should be reduced to a level of about six inches. Increase the water temperature to approximately 80 degrees (28C) to mimic the warm season. The male will build a bubble nest among floating plants or structure, after which spawning will take place beneath it. When spawning the male wraps his body around the female who will release hundreds of eggs.

The male will then take charge of caring for the eggs. At this point, remove the female. After about four days the fry will be free swimming and the male should be removed. Feed the fry liquid food or infusoria culture several times a day. Freshly hatched (or frozen) brine shrimp may be offered at about two weeks of age. Fine flake foods may be offered once they are approximately one month old. Water changes should be performed every two to three days. As the fry grown larger they should be distributed between several tanks to reduce lethal build up of wastes. Poor growth or sudden loss of fry is often due to excessive waste.

Care Level: Easy. Great for all levels of fish keeping. Take care when acclimatising the fish into the new tank.

Aquarium: Like most gourami, these fish prefer mediate to low water currents within a heavily planted tank. Provide lots of shelter for females.

Feeding: Wild caught specimens sometimes prove difficult on dry foods, but most will take frozen, or live food easily. Omnivourous.
