A very striking fish that is commonly the highlight of diving and snorkeling trips in tropical waters. Despite its beauty, this fish is best left in the ocean although there are a couple of species that the advanced aquarist may be able to keep. Other than its large size, the primary reason for these fish being difficult is the fact that they are very difficult feeders. Being primarily herbivores they require substantial amounts of algae in there diet and often feed on SPS/LPS corals. Many aquarists that are successfully keeping these fish will provide them with blocks of ceramic that has Nori and other dried algae’s cast into it. These fish will use there beak like teeth to break off chunks and grind it up sifting the algae and food matter out and discarding the porcelain much as they would SPS/LPS corals in their natural habitat. They are peaceful for the most part although will sometimes fight with conspecifics. Two of the most commonly offered species in the hobby are the Princess Parrot and the much larger Bi-Color Parrot.
