Title: a spawning.
Description: sweet!

FBG - August 10, 2006 03:22 AM (GMT)
wow, my american flag fish have spawned, i have cought 10 fry while cleaning some leaves off the top, they were about 1/2 an inch long, and were pretty fat.

i also saw one of my gold fish, and it looks like it is going to lay some eggs soon as well. i also found one little gold fish fry, about 1/4 inch long...or, it could be a minnow fry, i couldn't tell really.....I moved them to the pool (my filter is currently not working,so, i am using an old 115 GPH pump, so, less water movement.)

i was debating on putting them in an aquarium, but, i didn't want to chance spereding of disease on my 'show fish'.

Snowy - August 10, 2006 03:41 AM (GMT)
cool, lucky

FBG - August 10, 2006 04:14 AM (GMT)
lucky i saw them as well

Snowy - August 10, 2006 04:25 AM (GMT)
Yeah, very lucky

FBG - August 10, 2006 04:53 AM (GMT)
cute little figgies really, i hope no birds finds breakfast....

Snowy - August 10, 2006 05:01 AM (GMT)
Whats the hardiness of american flag fish?, i can think of a good home for them
unless you dont really care if they survive

FBG - August 11, 2006 11:28 PM (GMT)
well, considdering that they are alive now, i think that it is pretty high. LOL

Snowy - August 12, 2006 04:32 AM (GMT)
lol, alive, lol, so i suppose a guppy in a tank with 14 firemouth cichlids have a high survival rate because it is "alive" and has been for about 6 days?

LOL, Considering the fact that these fry are in an outside pond in the desert southwest where temps have recently reached 120F it shows a great deal of "heardiness".

Congrats on the fry Tyler! You could take them in and quarintine them in a rubbermade tub for a week or so(if you have extra equipment not in use, lol).

FBG - August 12, 2006 11:22 PM (GMT)
how big should the rubermade be?

Snowy - August 13, 2006 09:28 AM (GMT)
hmm, try to find one about 16" x 8" x 12", or at least one that can be 4 gallons if 5/7 filled up

dtroup - August 13, 2006 03:01 PM (GMT)
With 10 at a 1/2 inch long and growing I I would probably go for a 10 gal tub so that you can leave them in it for a month or more if you have to, also it's easier to maintain steady paramaters in a larger tank.

Snowy - August 13, 2006 06:48 PM (GMT)
Why not just set-up a 360 gallon hexagon tank thats 18 feet tall?, lol jk,
but yeah, bigger is better, as long as its small enough that you can manage the fry
and at 1\2 of an inch isnt fry to me, its juvenile adult

FBG - August 16, 2006 03:56 AM (GMT)
LOL, i would love to have a 360 hexagon aquarium, are you offering me a 360 gallon aquarium?

Snowy - August 16, 2006 02:24 PM (GMT)
Ill offer you an empty pop can for those fry, close enough

FBG - August 16, 2006 03:31 PM (GMT)
:D so instead of 360 gallons, you are giving my a pop can that will hold 360 drops?

i'll catch them today if it isn't too hot, and maybe take a picture :)

Snowy - August 16, 2006 07:38 PM (GMT)
it says in your sig that you got a 10 gal. planted tank, why not put them in there?

I think that is his intention but he is being responcible and want's to quarantine them first to prevent introducing disease to his 10 gal planted tank.

Snowy - August 17, 2006 03:08 PM (GMT)
yeah, i mean putting them after quarentine, i mean come on, would you put random pond fish in your fish tank without quarentining them?

FBG - August 18, 2006 02:57 AM (GMT)
well, i have been lazy...and i now have 4 golden killies that are spawning in there :) so, thats a no go there, i could just go out and buy a 10 gallon, they are only 8.99 at my LFS. and i haveevery thing tto set it up as well (OMG, i actually have extra stuff!! first time in my fish keeping life)

Snowy - August 18, 2006 07:45 AM (GMT)
i got leftover things you would believe.. i am only using 40% of my tanks!

FBG - September 2, 2006 06:01 AM (GMT)
well, it turns out, that i had skimmer dragonfly nymphs in my pond, and you know what that means right?? well, the fry were eaten, and the parents recently flew into the sky via bird express :o :wtf: i recently killed the rest of the nymphs, but, they keep reprodicing in my pond, grrr, i hate these guys! now i have to go out and buy more fish :(

Snowy - September 2, 2006 06:10 AM (GMT)
get some fathead minnows for the ponds to get the nymphs, they breed alot and protect theyre fry like cichlids. also put native fish in there like bass or something to control the minnows, thats just an idea , thats what id do, got to love ur native fish

FBG - September 3, 2006 12:50 AM (GMT)
yeah lol, i would gethead minnows, if i knew where to get them, i have never seen them in a LFS, or a pond store lol, thanks for telling me.

Snowy - September 3, 2006 01:13 AM (GMT)
well it is america, find a bait-shop, thats where i get mine, sure there less healthy at first, but they find their way, if not them.. umm i dunno.. mosquito fish? help keep mosquitos down?

FBG - September 3, 2006 03:42 PM (GMT)
alright, i'll go to a bait shopppe as soon as I can get my mother to take me to one

Snowy - September 4, 2006 01:13 AM (GMT)
yeah, i can understand how some people can tolerate a fish shot, but a bait shop?, not sure many people think its a very clean place,

FBG - September 4, 2006 08:30 PM (GMT)
lol, just wondering, what is a fish shot, have to say, i have never heard of one LOL.

Snowy - September 5, 2006 06:25 AM (GMT)
its ummwhere you umm.. ahem*, inject mashed fish into your bloodstream,

aboviously a typo for fish *shop* , LFS

:drunk:  :green:

well, i bought some "mosquito fish" that look more like killifish than any thing related to a guppie, i got 21 for 4 dollers at a bait shop, i thought that was a great deal, i am giving some to my brother, because he has no fish in his pond yet. so, my sister-in-law will come by and get them tonight, and, lol, hopefully the mosquitos will not be breeding as much at his house any more.

Snowy - September 6, 2006 12:16 AM (GMT)
you can stick a mosquito fish in a cooking pot and it'd survive if there was a bubbler, lowest required air of any non-labyrinth fish that i know of.

lol, i knew u'd get a kick out of what i do with the fish that die in my tank, blender and water and ice here i come.

FBG - September 20, 2006 05:03 AM (GMT)
lol.

no luck finding fathead minnows. LOL unless, mosquito fish are another word for them

Snowy - September 20, 2006 05:23 AM (GMT)
nah they different, fathead minnows are the EXACT same thing as rosy reds, tuffys, feeder fish.. lol, so if ur pet shop dont got em, lousy pet shop
just a color mutation

FBG - October 8, 2006 02:47 PM (GMT)
i did happen to find the fathead minnow, 5 cents a piece with my discount.

awesome, thank you for the tip.

oh, and, my LFS dosn't cary rosy reds, just feeder guppies, and gold fish, so i had to go to, petco, and bought them there, which, i also happened to get a blue gill user posted image for only 25 cents. along with 3 other gold fish. the lady said the blue gill would kill the gold fish later on, but, i am not too sure, however, i havent ever studied any swimming, or, behavior, so i don't know for sure....

Tyler

Snowy - October 8, 2006 07:01 PM (GMT)
cute bluegill, i want it.

FBG - October 9, 2006 05:57 PM (GMT)
are they cichlids, because it has the cichlid eye......lol.

oh, i have another question, i have some jumping fathead minnows, ummmm, they are jumping 4" to beguin with, then, going up, 450 GPH down fall stream, then, over a little wall, and into my 30 gallon holding area for guppies, is the possible, or, is this birds transporting the minnows up there? i also have another one in the very top part where my pumps empty into a little spot for plants. i hae never seen a little fish do this, my gold fish have, in my dads old pond, but, this is kinda weird for them to be doing that.

i also bought another pump, non-self priming, 350 GPH, and, i have to hide the plumbing now. :( but, there is absoluty no way they can be sucked up into the filter, and, shot out of the out take, so, i think it could only be the birds, or, they are migrating to spawn and die, like salmon. LOL

help would be helpfull. :-p

Thanks
Ty

dtroup - October 10, 2006 01:42 PM (GMT)
Your fatheads are jumping, that's why they make such good bait! :lmao:

FBG - October 10, 2006 09:59 PM (GMT)
LOL, i guess so. but, it is fast moving water, i didn't know they were soo 'strong'

Snowy - October 13, 2006 11:03 PM (GMT)
ur bluegill is not a cichlid. panfish and cichlids are different, though very similiar

Or.. if u mean fathead minnow

there characins like koi, carp, goldfish, white clouds. etc.

vTEC - November 22, 2006 06:12 AM (GMT)
this is an ooooooooooooold thread

but if your blue gill (aka SUNFISH) is still alive... then yes it will eat goldfish as soon as they can fit in its mouth
