Title: Loach question
Description: clowns
dtroup - August 10, 2006 08:58 AM (GMT)
I am wondering if a couple small clowns would try to eat large, like 1-2inch snails, and if they would bother Krib fry/eggs.

I'm sure they would try for the snails but they may get at the kribs too. All fish are opportunistic feeders.

they wont get the large snails but yes they will try like glaive said, at least, not at small sizes, like most loaches, clowns like meat suppliments, and might attempt to eat the eggs, but i'd doubt that they'd get it, as cichlids would rather bend over backwards, and put there heaed through their legs 5 times, before losing their fry

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to do another tank if I want clowns.
I can't put them with my ELB's.

Oh, you might really want to remove such large snails if your kribs breed, as large snails are monster killers, of they can climb on to something at any time whatsoever they will kill it, and eat it.
and if the kribs are guarding the nest, i doubt they'd move often, and at night ( or day ) when the lights are off, the snail has a large chance of getting to, and killing either the parents or the eggs. happened to my friends angels, and my brothers pearl gouramis, so they put those killers in my friend's cousins oscar tank where they got pounded in the gravel until their shells cracked open and the oscars ate them,
we really hated those golden apple snails
if you want snails that clean up, get small ones, preferably ramshorn snails, as they will not kill, breed like nuts, and are great cleaners, they do eat fish, but only dead ones, they could clear your tank of dead fry within an hour, but if they find it right away, 20 mins. very helpful, especially in hidden spots, i heard that you found a dead kuhli while removing endlers from your large tank, well ramshorns are perfect for that, all you'll find as a skeleton ( most often they eat the bones too ).

I don't think that will be a problem, first I feed extra food to my tanks just to make sure the snails get their share, and to deter them from eating my plants, second  the ones I have in my 10 gal get picked on by my little bitty Endlers Livebearers. If they are scared of somthing about 1/4 their size/mass I doubt they will take on a cichlid.

hmm, but still be careful, large snails have lots of stories, and dont be suprised if you find em crawling on a perfectly healthy fish, that died for.. unknown reasons ( cough* cough* snail* )

I havn't been able to find any ramshorns locally, I had to go from about 60 miles south of Duluth to Saint Cloud to get the mystery snails I have.

We can discuss it more in a few months when my colony is a bit bigger, and then only if you promise NEVER to keep them in the same tank as guppys. My Endlers are "Class N" which boils down to "never been crossed with guppys and can be traced back to their native lagoona in Venesuela" For more info on the species check out the link in my sig.
