Title: umm, weird question.

FBG - September 3, 2006 12:54 AM (GMT)
i was just wondering, how did you teach your koi, and gold fish to eat, mine typicaly stay at the bottom of the pond. and, i have no idea how to "teach" them to come up to the serface of the water and eat, like my aquarium fish :drunk:

never had to do it with my aquarium fish, the store i usually buy from, they are already feed at the top with flakes, this store used thoes 7 day feeders.

i bpught a koi today for 3 dollers, it is a dull yellow, with a perfect dark yellow spot on the top of his head, i'll show you the pic when i get it on the comp later tonight.

Thanks, in advanced :)

well, just give it time, it usually helps if you buy a school of them and then some dither fish, the dither fish will eat right away and the larger fish will come to.

i just found this great link on dither fish, i think i may try silver dollers, for the summer. (bring them inside for the colder months, it usually gets pretty cold during the winter, one time it was actually, 10 degrees in the morning......LOL)

how many silver dollers should i get, or tiger barbs. (5+ it said on the barbs)

:pft: 10 degrees? thats squat nothing to what us mini SNOW tons get.

Silzer dollars are very good dither fish, but i think they might be kinda expensive. giant danios would be good dithers because of their coldwater habits and their size,
But do ot choose danio-dither fish if you plan to get goldfish with *fancy* fins, if you kept just comets *like the one u have* you would be fine with danios, arizona is nothing like the amazon river bason ( sp? ) and i dboutit'd be easy to care for silver dollars. Stick to less tropical fish, such as danios, minnows, white clouds, Or since you are in an area where livebeares can survive, they would be a great idea, get like 2 male and 5 female swordtails, that way, the fry that survive and get to a size wherethe goldfish will chase them maybe to eat and be more outgoing.

if you choose to get silver dollars, get like 7 of them, since 3 might die due to being an *aquarium* fish going into a pond, tiger barbs i personally have no problems with, they seem great, but they might nip fins of*fancy* goldfish is you choose to buy them, if you go for tiger barbs, the same rules apply as theydid for giant danios.

EDIT:::: i just read that you did get a fancy goldfish, so.. yeah.. thats a hard one since you do have one..
I'd say either fathead minnows, livebearers still, american flag fish might be good ( for old times sake ) or if you wish, silver dollars, just make sure you keep a good eye on them.

if you have goldfish in a pond outside, don't feed them over winter. they go into hibernation and the food, which doesn't get eaten, will just sink to the bottom making the water yucky.

Dude with koi, size is everything, as he gets bigger he will start to come to the surface more as there is less odds that there is something out there to eat it! I think the only thing that cold take on some of my dads koi is Godzilla

Hey, yeah, Tyler.. time for an update. Wake up Rhamza.

FBG - February 28, 2007 01:13 AM (GMT)
who told you to call me by my nick name huh? :jk:

well, it didn't fair over the winter, but I will get another one once the water gets warmer. (the lowest temp was around 15 or so at my house)

Snowy - April 4, 2007 07:33 AM (GMT)
Well, Would you prefer I call you "Yuna"?

Hmm, got a new one yet?

FBG - April 4, 2007 04:37 PM (GMT)
not yet, i was looking for another what the pet stores call butterfly Koi, It's more like a bottom swimming koi. when i had mine, it was chasing my blue gill all over. which is now.....about 6-7" long, he's very 'cute' and, my gold fish are not the top dogs in the pond, the biggest one an awesome looking white with red circular dots on the top of it's head and near tail is just a little larger than the bluegill.

i recently added 2 more 'wild caught coloration goldfish' thats a grayish coloration, kind of small, 3"

and I'd rather Rhamza :D

Runa or Yhamza?

Heh, sounds like those fish there are growing rather nicely.

FBG - April 5, 2007 03:35 PM (GMT)
