Title: New to this site
Description: Not to the hobby
ICHTHYOSPORIDIUM - September 4, 2006 12:46 AM (GMT)
Hello to everyone,I am from Alberta, Canada.
I am new to this site, I hope to be of some use to all who seek knowledge and experience in this hobby and I hope to learn a few new tricks myself!
My experience in aquaculture was a birthright as my father raised and bred many types of fish, both Fresh Water and Marine. He was only a Farmer from the Eckville area and yet his practical knowledge was amazing.
When I was 16, I began what turned into an eight year career at a LFS in my home town. The owner had a PhD in Aquatic Biology and 25 years practical experience in the hobby. A hard man to work for, but he took it upon himself to teach me all that he knew.
I sudied hard and eventually, I ran the store single handedly. After eight years, I felt the need to move on. It was not an easy decision to make
I still keep five tanks, four Fresh water, one Marine, and a terarrium for a coffee table which houses some Betta imbellis, white cloud minnows, weather loach, BN Pleco, and two species of dendrobates (poison dart frogs). It is neat to look at the transition between water and land and how the inhabitants use it.
I also have three tanks devoted to killie fish which are my absolute favorite family.
The first tank ia an Aphyosemion tank, I have three species that I house. They are:
1. Aphysemion Australe (I don't know anyone who collects Killies and doesn't have a group of these.)
2. Aphyosemion Volcanum
3. Aphyosemion maculatum
Aphysemion is definitely one of the most colorfull groups of Killies. Their general cranky attitudes are very entertaining.
The next tank has three species of Nothobranchius. These guys are definitely little jewels.
1. Nothobranchius sp. (still not sure what species this is, When I get some pics up, maybe I can get all you people to try and identify this one!)
2. Nothobranchius orthonotus
2. Nothobranchius korthausae (This little fish has to have the reddest color than anyother Notho I have seen.
For each species, I try to run (5) females to every male. My Aphyos are in a ten to one ratio where as my nothos are in a three to one ratio
The last tank is a mix of species, divided of course!
1. Callopanchax monroviae - blue form
2. Rivulus xiphidus (this is one of the most strikingly coloured killies out there)
3. Simpsonichthys reticulatus (another colourful species of killifish)
I will get pics up A.S.A.P.
My other freshwater tank is a 48 gal. community that is fully planted. I have clown loaches(5), Serpae, rummy nose, and Emporer tetras. Also, there are Two leporinus, 4 halfbeaks, scissortail rasbora, a zebra pleco that is 5 years old (it is the only fish I have named... ...Spot of course!). I also have some jullii corydoras, and I use three farrowellas to keep the algae down. I occasionally am treated to the sight of my banjo cat (this species of fish is surprisingly tame or it just doesn't care about anything). My marine is a 77 gal. reef and houses a pelethera of species of fish, corals, crustacea, mollusks, and other invertabrates. When I get some pics up, I'll list more in detail because there is quite the variety in there.
I also have a small feeder tank, quarrantine tank and hospital tank for both marine and freshwater.
This forum seems to be a well informed group that doesn't mind sharing information to both veteran and beginner members. You also seem to be open minded in your discussions... Nice!
I look forward to future discussions and topics that this group presents.
Cheers people

Thankyou suicidalyouth.
The local forum that I frequent has quite a few killie fish experts on it. I would be happy to assist you when you decide to try killies.

Just got back from Seeing Miami Vice. First off, I am glad I waited for the cheap theater to see it. If you haven't seen it, wait for it on DVD. Anyway, thankyou to all for the welcome.
The only Fundulopanchax species I have ever raised and bred was Fp. ndianus. There is something about livebearing toothcarps that just fascinates me. I look at all my tanks but I find myself staring at those killies the most. Maybe it is because I like a planted tank so much and killies go hand in hand with such a setup. Cant wait to see what everyone else is keeping around here. I'll have some pics when I get a new cam.
I was at the Calgary zoo on Friday and I dropped the damn thing into the fish pond in the conservatory. Managed to save the SD ram card but the cam did not make it :rip: I needed a better cam for macros anyway. I am a picky shopper, so bear with me for a couple of weeks. I will then post pics till you tell me to bugger off with all the pics.
