Title: Memoirs of an LFS
Description: It never hurts to ask

Back in 1992, I was in full swing, running a LFS in Red Deer, Alberta.
One day, I have this one customer, a little old lady who was a regular customer for canary supplies. On this particular day, she decided to buy a goldfish and bowl with all the supplies a person needed to take good care of their new arrival. She took awesome care of her canary, followed directions and advice very well.

A couple of days later, she was back in, her fish had died. No problem, after a few questions, I determined that the comet had died from normal anatomical failure. When she returned again three days later with the same problem, a little bell started to go off. This was really perplexing because according to the questions I had asked and the answers given, there should be nothing wrong with the goldfish that were being taken home. This scenario repeated it's self for three weeks!

Finally, I had to ask her to tell me everything she was doing without the questions being asked. She began to recite the routine I gave to her for care and maintenance. Perfect....

...."I just don't understand" she said. "I love my pets, I love these fish, I even take them out and pet them every day!" she proclimated. WHOA!, STOP! :?: "What was that?" I stammered.

Now, here I am tying to keep professional and a straight face because the lady was honestly thinking she was being kind to the fish and was giving them attention and was doing them no harm.

Boy! the shock on her face when she realised what she had done! To make it better, I showed her a bit of faith by once again giving her another replacement for free. No problem! For the next five years, that fish lived from bowl to aquarium and was given the life of Riley. Sadly, the goldfish wound up outliving it's owner. The daughter decided to build a pond to house this fish as a memorial to her mother. To this day, that fish is still patrolling that same pond! :)
