Title: Red gills?

funnibunni80 - September 6, 2006 01:36 PM (GMT)
Hi, I had a question about black skirted tetras? I just bought a few, and at first I noticed that one had gills that were semi-red in color. A friend said it was because there was too much amonia at the LPS, so I didn't worry about it. Now I am noticing that the the other tetras have red gills as well. They are all behaving normaly, eating, ect. I've been looking it up, and all the sites I have visited also say ammonia, but they are not gasping at the surface at all. They only go up there to eat. What's going on with these guys?

Tank stats:
26gal tank

ammonia - 0ppm
NO2- 0ppm
NO3- 10ppm
pH- 7.5 (normal)

1 red fin shark
4 oto cats
3 black skirt tetras

Thanks for any help!

Oxygen makes blood red, gills are thin membranes with blood in them.

If their breathing is normal and they eat I would not worry.

Some fishes' operculum, the bony covering that cover the gills, are some times translucent, especially in smaller fish.

Like Glaive said "If their breathing is normal and they eat I would not worry."
