He's a nice looking pike, but I have no idea on the species.

Nice! Gotta love the Pikes!....I'm with Glaive though, clueless on the species.

Crenicichla compressiceps
Crenicichla proteus * seems to stand out as likely
Crenicichla sp. "bellycrawler"
Are sold as a green pike cichlid.
Another page of the genus.

YW, but thank who ever mentioned he looked like green pike.
I may have a line on an expert who can look at the picture if that would ok with you.
cich1 - December 26, 2006 05:27 AM (GMT)
absolutely dude, let's see what they have to say.:)

I'll do a little email correspondence and feel them out.

If you've gotten an expert opinion, let me know. I would say it's definitely a juvenile of one of the lugubris group pikes, so definitely not a compressiceps, belly crawler or proteus. Maybe a strigata, but I won't stake myself out on a definite ID. Beautiful fish though, whatever it grows into!

thanks fish speaker, yeah i was thinking he was a member of the lugubris group. i'm still leaning heavily towards strigata. Alex is working on getting an ID from that person. i think we may have to wait until this guy matures to be sure of a species, i have heard that pikes have huge color and marking shifts from juvie to adult. thanks for the reply dude, much appreciated.:)

Honestly pike cichlids are rare here, very rare and ive never as such read about them or seen them, im intrigued now!
im hazarding a guess at Crenicichla vittata , C, semifasciata, c.edithae but let me do some research with the Baensch Aquarium Atlas and have a chat with a few people down here and i might be able to give you something better than just "my best guess"
