This thread is for people to learn a little about how to raise guppies, share tips, or suggest other fish when first setting up a tank.
I highly recommend Guppies, because they are (for the most part) inexpensive and hardy- they do well in a 7.2-8.4 pH range. Temp can be from 70 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. They also do very well in hard water- see the sticky on water chem. They come in a wide variety of colours, body and tail shape, they are very active, and easy to breed. They should be kept in trios consisting of one male to every female, because all the tail-chasing can become stressful to the female. The tank should be lightly planted so the babies can hide if you don't want to use a net breeder. Gestation periods last from 20-28 days. You can tell the female is pregnant by th gravid spot- located near the anus. You can pick and choose colour and shape to selectively breed preferred genes. This info may variy, as it's from my own experiences. I've ownde guppies on and off for 6-7 years. I'm experienced with most livebreeders, and I still prefer to breed guppies over other fish.
One word of warning: They breed often, and multiply fast. If you have one tank, you may want to control the breeding. If you have other tanks, you can breed guppies and feed the ones you do not want to other fish.
Be kind to the fish, because their lives are in your hands. The only humane methods to "dispose" of unwanted fish is either to take them to a pet store, give them to another fish breeder, or continue the life cycle by feeding them to a carnivorous fish.
As for ALLfish: NEVER release them into the wild, as they may damage the ecosystem of other organisms.
