Title: Betta fish constipation

falconhawk - November 30, 2006 10:45 PM (GMT)
Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me regarding my Betta. How do I know if it is constipated? It has trouble swimming to the bottom and just keeps on trying. If he is constipated I read that I should feed him peas. If this is right are we talking normal peas or is there a special kind of pea?

:thanks: Betta Fish

Moved to the Fish 911 forum. :)

Is he floating at the surface or do you mean he's at the bottom and he can't swim up? If he's floating it's something more serious...if he's sinking to the bottom it's a swim bladder problem, usually cured by more water changes. Constipation includes bloat and no visual pooping...I've never seen a case that causes swimming problems. But yes...peas reaallly help and they love em!

Can you specify the symptoms more?

If he is actually constipated then India Almond leaves or epsom salts would help alleviate it.

i have heard that epsom salts are good for relieving constipation.

If you want to go with peas you want to use either babyfood peas or frozen peas and run them under hot water to thaw them and then squeeze them out of the membraine, you will also want to crush them down to bite size pieces.
