I found this little beauty at Petco of all places. She's about an inch long so she is still young.I bought her with two other females to cycle a new 30 gallon tank.So after a little :bitchslap: to establish who is in charge Pearl is queen of the tank :winner: .Quite an accomplishment since she is smaller than the other two.WHAT A FIND!

I've noticed that Petco Is selling bettas younger and younger. The males are the same size as the girls.Roughly an inch long and finnage not fully grown out.

dtroup - January 7, 2007 02:45 PM (GMT)
She's purdy!

Snowy - January 7, 2007 03:45 PM (GMT)
nice, pure white, that is quite a find.

I've noticed PetCo has been selling them smaller and smaller too. They've probably been hearing all the talk by betta folk and I guess the public knows that bigger lives less long, so they decided to sell them younger.

Finally some good pics of the other little girls.

Snowy,Pearl has just a hint of Redwash on her fins though you can't see it in the pic.It will probably become more promienent as she gets older.I'll probably post pics of her as she gets older.

Snowy - January 9, 2007 10:17 PM (GMT)
Ahh, yes, I see the hint of red.. really easy to see it on the lower half on it's tail.

Feed us,Dad.

The girls 1 hour after breakfast.Note they are all showing battle damage.Adding the plants caused a hole new round of fighting for dominance.Pearl is now #2.

rogerlee - January 20, 2007 07:31 PM (GMT)
they look beautiful , nice pics

rgw187 - January 20, 2007 10:56 PM (GMT)
Thanks.I don't really know what I'm doing with a camera. So,for every posted pic there is a dozen that were discarded.Thank god I got a digital.
Anyway, I just added 4 Harlequin Rasboras to the tank about 20minutes ago.Thanx to Snowy for the suggestion. The girls are very curious (sp) about them, but not aggressive. So far.Knock on wood.

This is probably going to turn into a journal about the devolepment of the tank,so if one of the Mods want to move it to a different thread I'll understand.

rogerlee - January 20, 2007 11:32 PM (GMT)
the tanks look great will look forward to more pics got to take some myself when i get used to my digi cam

dtroup - January 21, 2007 02:53 PM (GMT)
Your ladies look awesome! The tank looks like a nice comefortable place to live too.

rgw187 - January 23, 2007 01:50 AM (GMT)
Thanks,Dorothy. The sad statement of where I live is expressed by the decorations in the tank.I went to the local Petco and Petsmart and made a list of what I wanted. Then I came home, got online, went to their websites and ordered.Even including S&H,I saved about 30%.But enough pissing and moaning.
If the water tests keep looking good,I'll add some more Rasboras next weekend.About 3 weeks after that I'll drop in some Corys, then leave things alone until everybody is full grown.

dtroup - January 23, 2007 02:09 PM (GMT)
Ghost shrimp can be a cool addition, and they pick off algae.

If you are only trashing 12 pics for every usable one you are doing a whole lot better than I am, I trash 30 or 40 for each useable pic!

Thank goodness for digital technology!

ShadowElite951 - January 24, 2007 04:03 PM (GMT)
Cute group of girls! :D

You shouldn't have to worry about the rasboras...unless they're really small. The girls will hunt them down and bite their eyes out.

rgw187 - January 25, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
I woke up this morning and noticed my tank is getting cloudy, probably over feeding the Rasboras.I decided to do my tests just in case.I use API test kits so there are all the little test tubes to fill.I felt a bump on my finger and saw the turquoise betta was jumping out of the water and trying to bite me!The little bitch!
I just love a betta with lots of attitude  .

rgw187 - January 29, 2007 06:47 PM (GMT)
Normally I don't do rescues. This wasn't the usual rescue.Yesterday I was further south than usual and decided to stop at the local Petco for some bloodworms for the girls. Now this particular petco has a very bad reputation and is under investigation by the Humane Society.Again.For the third time int 6 years that I have lived in the area.I would never buy fish there.Normally.
Anyhoot when I got out of the car there was a mother and teenage girl argueing in the parking lot.The daughter had bought a fish she intended keep in a tiny fishbowl, about a quart.I saw from a distance that it was a female betta container.
To make a long story short I gave the young lady 10$ for the betta and explained to her the fishbowl was best used for flowers.Ioffered the comparison of spending the rest of ones life locked in a port-a-potty.Clever girl understood quickly, made a profit, and her mother was happy too.
Oh,Imade out like a bandit too. Meet the latest addition to the Bytch Skool,Glory.

She fit right in with a minamum of :bitchslap: .

dtroup - January 30, 2007 12:42 PM (GMT)
Beautiful addition! :kewl:

Did you still want this moved to the Journal section? Either way is fine. :goodpost:

rgw187 - January 30, 2007 04:39 PM (GMT)
Yeah, let's go ahead and move it since it is turning into a journal about the tank.

A weird note about Pearl and Glory. They get along great, swim together, and team up against the other girls.

rgw187 - January 31, 2007 06:02 PM (GMT)
Not good news today. One Rasbora dead and one I can't find. :rip: Water tests fine so I just don't know. The dead one wasn't physically damaged so the girls did'nt kill it.I hope. The tank is situated in a corner with a large bookcase next to it so I cannot really get a good look.
Sometimes fish just die for no obvious reason.

dtroup - January 31, 2007 10:01 PM (GMT)
Sorry for your loss.

rgw187 - February 9, 2007 08:19 PM (GMT)
May not be adding to the journal for a while.Got clipped on my Sporty last week.Broken right arm and shoulder and yet another skull fracture. But the aquarium, Pearl and the rest of the girls are doing fine.So are the Rasboras.
It was a good thing I trained the neighbor's son to care for my tanks for when we go on trips, since I was in the butcher shop for the last week.

rogerlee - February 9, 2007 08:35 PM (GMT)
hope you are ok. she looks a little gem :kewl:

dtroup - February 10, 2007 12:43 PM (GMT)
OUCH, hope they give you some good meds and you heal up ok!

rgw187 - February 26, 2007 04:49 AM (GMT)
New pics!I've had the girls for 8 weeks now and they have all doubled in size and filled out some.

Pearl.

She has turned totally camera shy.Best shot out of 40 trys.Queen of the tank.

Glory.

Holding as the #2 and a real poser.

Cristy.

My personal favorite.Whenever I get near the tank, she begins her jumping routine. She will only stop after I reach in and stroke her with my index finger.Never heard of a Betta that likes to be pet.

Lil'Blue.

Bottom of the totem pole but does'nt seem to mind. Not aggressive at all.Have to feed her away from the others or she would starve.

Also 5 rasboras but they are to quick to get a descent picture.

dtroup - February 26, 2007 12:28 PM (GMT)
Sweet pics!

I'm with you, I've never heard of a betta that likes to be pet... :hmm:

rgw187 - February 26, 2007 05:36 PM (GMT)
Yeah, she's a real Daddy's Girl.Only other fish to win my heart the way she has was our beloved Psycho Phish :rip: He was a total oddball and lunatic too.
Anyway,Cristy acts like she really enjoys the petting. She bends and stretches and does the "betta wiggle".Maybe she thinks she is a cat stuck in a fishes body

dtroup - February 27, 2007 11:41 AM (GMT)
LOL she ought to fit right in out in your area! :lmao:
