Title: Pregnant Platty
Description: How do you know?

LauraWilliamZ - January 25, 2007 03:50 PM (GMT)
Hi. My Platty is pregnant, I'm sure of it. It's tummy has swelled up and is all bulbusy.

I read the post called "liverbearers" and he spoke of a net. How do you know when to use such a net? Is it really neccesary? My fish are all really nice. I have small neon tetras and none of the other fish pick on them. Will I be fine with some breeding grass for the babies to hide in? Or will I need the net?
I have;
2 plattys (one is the pregnant one)
4 red and black fancy tetras
4 peach gouramis
2 nean dwarf gouramis
8 small neon tetras
1 pleco
2 new baby snails? (kind of a mystery)
29 gal tank

I will appreciate any advice I can get! I don't want to kill and baby fish!

Thanks!

_Laura

you could leave them to have the fry in the main tank as long as there are plenty of plants to hide then the stronger fry will survive or you could separate the female in a breeding net but when she has had her fry get her out quick as she will eat them. i am only going on what my guppies do. and i have 25 fry in a net now. GOOD LUCK! :woo:

Roger seems on the money to me.

Only thing I can really add is a simple rule of fish keeping. The nicest fish becomes a killer when something can fit in its mouth.

So how did it go?

My platys just drop their fry wherever they happen to be. My 55 is fairly well planted and it seems that the fry are doing a good job of surviving, but they only have to worry about their parents. I started with 2 platys and by the third month I had 24 and more on the way! Then I bought more!LOL
Now that I'm getting rid of them I'm glad that they eat their own young because I've given away 2 dozen fish and still have at least that many to get rid of but I'm running out of friends with tanks.

Just thought I'd give you an idea of what you may be in for! Have fun and enjoy the fry!

It's fun to have 2-3 different patterns together because it's a guessing game as to what they are going to look like, you gotta have patience when you are waiting for them to color up, my Endlers are the same way.
