Title: New Tank showing some ammonia
Description: No nitrates or trites

cyndit - February 9, 2007 05:56 PM (GMT)
My 3 1/2 week old 55g tank is showing .5ppm of ammonia w/no nitrates or nitrates evident yet. My temp is 77F and the ph is about 6.5. I think the link on nitrates you guys have posted says this is okay in a newer tank. I seeded the tank from an existing 10g and have been adding stress zyme bacteria. I've got two 4-5" angels, five jumbo danios and a pair of waterfall shrimp.
Should I just keep and eye on the levels, do a partial change or what? Just want to make sure I'm doing okay.
Thanks

Watch the levels and the fish' behavior if they appear to being negatively affected start doing water changes. Water changes will increase the cycle time. When you notice nitrites go head and add 3 teaspoons of aquarium salt. Mix the salt in a glass with some of your aquarium water.

Hi glaive-
Stil no nites but I already have sig salt in tank that I've been bringing down slowly (LFS guy told me 1 Tblsp per 5g!) but my old angel was used to that and did great with it. I probably did two 5g changes while re-starting my 10g. Fish still look good. If the ammonia goes up (how much?) how much water should I change?
thanks-

Watch your fish, they will let you know on the ammonia.
Your lfs guy is a bit captain overkill with the salt, I would consider
1 teaspoon / 5 gallons for ich maybe.
