Title: Lyretail Mollies
Description: When do the fry come?

Camby - March 27, 2007 12:52 AM (GMT)
Hey quick question... i just bought 2 new lyre-tail mollies for my 30 gallon tank... one male named Elvis, and a female named Priscilla who is VERY pregnant... I'm not sure how long she has been pregnant and i was wondering if there was a way to tell, or if there was a way to encourage her to give birth to the fry.... i am really scared i am going to go to school and then come home to find that she has eaten them all.... i put her in a breeder net in the tank and i have been taking good care of her but i don't want anything to happen to the fry... any suggestions?

With my Endlers a 25% water change that drops the tank's temp by 1-2 degrees usually induces them to give birth, it mimics monsoon season in their natural environment. I don't know if it will work for your Mollys or not.

To improve fry survival rate if you are not around...take some of that plant in the pic (fake or real doesn't matter) and bunch it up in the bottom of the breeder net to give the fry someplace to hide from mom.

I just wanted to post and let you know she gave birth today and they well all gone by the time i got home... I had taken her out of the breeding new as to some advice from several different sources and then i got home and she was skinny, and there were no babies... im really disappointed...

Bummer, there is always next month.

You might try a breeding trap instead of the net, you can still use the net to protect them after they are born.
