Title: The guppie question.

FBG - September 15, 2007 03:34 AM (GMT)
I have a small question about guppies... I know that the females can 'store' the sperm from a previous spawning, and that they hatch the fry inside and then 'spit them out' live. I have a male and he was in this aquarium for over 4 months with 3 females and no fry...untill I put another male in there and now i have fry after a few of weeks. Could I have an unfertile male? or a female that has that reproductive fin? also, the new fry have the new male's color. the female only had two, but they turned out to be pretty large, and 100% healthy

here is a pic of the male that died for no known reason, the new one i put in a while ago before i had a spawning.

the batch I had after the male was introduced only produced 2 and they are both females from the coloration. (they are about 3 weeks old now and have all there color i think) the fry have the exact coloration as the dead male, and I'm wondering should I buy another male or wait for the fry to get large enough to breed,

tonight i had another batch of 4 fry. oh, i should mention, that the male was sold in a pair, and that female was the one who had fry. but the batch tonight was from one of the other guppies that was sold as a feeder (just plain silver/clear or what ever you want to call it.)

I would send pictures of the fry, but they are soo few and small, and fast for my camera to capture them in the focused position.

Thanks in advanced.

During the time you had the first male in the tank was there any fluctuation in temps, parameters or anything like that? The female can hold the sperm decide not to have babies if she doesn't like the conditions she's living in, or you could have had a sterile male. I'd wait and see what the fry end up looking like.

Not to my knowledge but i check every 5 months or so, and every thing thing usually stays the same.
