Title: My New 50 gallon.
Description: a few questions.

FBG - January 3, 2008 04:15 PM (GMT)
ok, so I don't have the CO2 hooked on the aquarium as of yet, last night I barely finished the sand, and I have a peice of grapewood, and eventually have manzanita (SP?) that I found while on a hike. I need to know, do I have to boil it to get what might be in the wood out? or can I freeze it, and then rapidly thaw it? and if I can't do that,. then what would be the best way to boil it, because I don't have a container large enough for that big of a piece. (it's 2 feet long or about) I have a water tight wheelbarrow, but, being winter, the water would be getting colder rather than hotter in the sun.

my second question.

when I do set up my CO2, I won't have any fish in the aquarium, and most likely wont for about 3 months, would I have to test the PH any way, or can I get the test result from my tap water (my tap, is from our personal well) and then test the tank after the three or so months of being set up with plants?

my Third question.

Do any of you guys have the CO2 system from Red Sea? if so, could I see a picture of it set up, to see if I have assembled mine correctly, because there are no pictures in the manual, just text, and I'd like to be 100% correct

Thanks,

Tyler

it wouldn't be a bad idea to test the ph. that way you can watch for drops or spikes and dial everything in before you get any fish in there. why don't you soak the manzanita in the wheelbarrow in a light bleach solution for a day or so, then rinse and soak in dechlorinated water for a few days.

alright, that'll be easy enough. thanks.

I agree with Cich, I usually soak in bleach and then 3-5 rinse soaks with dechlorinater, I also use a wire wheel attached to a drill to remove any loose stuff that might foul the water.

I don't have a drill at home untill my dad gets home, and the wire wheel has other things I'd rather not have in my aquarium, so I have wire pot scrubbers and that seems to do the work, and it not, a razor blace will do the work. where should I get dechlorinater? just at a grocer store?

You can use Prime or start-right or just about any dechlorinater you can get your hands on, just whatever you would use in your tank.
