puffers do puff, but generally only when stressed and it's not good for them. I have seen my arrowhead puff up once and I snapped a couple pics before turning the lights out to calm him down. Here's a pic of what he looked like. :)

and to answer your other question, yes there are actually a lot more pure freshwater species than there are brackish species.
Here is a list of several freshwater puffers as well as a few brackish water puffers as well. :)

Yep there are a lot of freshwater puffers available, but there are some very nice brackish puffers! Consider a brackish set up, it is well worth the effort, check out the brackish fish index for a few ;) you'll be surprised whats available
Anyway this is THE spot for puffers so ask away :)
Another thing about puffers (at least in the case of the mbu and dragon puffers ive seen) is that they grunt when they inflate! Its pretty cool, also to boot they usually have a poor tolerance to tank mates, research them thoroughly before you attampt to co habitate them

the only thing that i experienced between brack and fresh was keeping the salinity (salt level) in check. when you do a water change, it is important to get the water prepared in a separate container and add the salt slowly. the gradient cannot change by more than +/- .002 from your tank water because any bigger of a change and the bacteria dies, and it stresses your fish out.
if you are looking at getting BW puffers, check out the Fish index in the gallery area of the forum, go to brackish water, and i've typed out a few caresheets on the more popular bw puffs. Oddball also typed out caresheets on some other bw fish. check it out and let me know if there's anything else i can help ya with.
