Title: Got a spare 5 gallon
Description: Need help deciding what fish

BettasRFriends - May 8, 2005 03:44 AM (GMT)
I was given a free 5 gallon tank (long) with a 10 gallon filtration system. I want a densely planted tank (was thinking anubias nana petite, java fern, java moss, micro sword, anything else that is small). About the fish, I have a couple of choices (add more if you can): 5 neon tetras OR 1 kribensis OR just plants. Any suggestions?

mr_miagi32 - May 8, 2005 04:26 AM (GMT)
3 Kuhli loaches?

Dwarf_Dude - May 8, 2005 08:10 AM (GMT)
kribs are out of the question, need a tank 4 times the size of that :)
guppys, ADFs, pygmy cories
or a betta

i had a nano sw in a 5. lots of work, LOTS of money.. but it was cool. sold it as a complete set up eventually....

Hmmm. I wonder what we're at now.

I'll list what you could do (including some already mentioned):

Pygmy cories
African Dwarf Frogs
Dwarf pufferfish
Saltwater Nano (and then....)
Betta (male or female)
Pygmy Sunfish
Pygmy Gouramis
Heterandria Formosa (Hets)
Ghost Shrimp
Dwarf Crayfish
Endlers
Neon Tetra
Bumblebee Gobies (brackish)
Harlequin Rasboras
Spotted Rasbora/Dwarf Rasbora (rasbora maculata)
Snails

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now you have even more choices! lol. Anything from there (besides the neons) catch your eye?

Hmmm...from what I have heard, saltwater nanos are cheaper than a large saltwater setup. Well, my neighbor went all out when his wife got him a 125g Saltwater tank for Christmas. It's perty. :P :D

In a tank that size with plants I would go with about 10 Endlers and leave it at that. I would look really pretty IMO and should be relatively easy to care for.

Punkypuffer - May 10, 2005 03:32 AM (GMT)
when i said lots of money for a 5 gal nano, i meant a lot of money spent on just a 5 gallon tank :P

ShadowElite951 - May 10, 2005 09:54 PM (GMT)
I would go with a group of White Clouds. They don't really require a lot of room and a heater is not nessesary for they can survive without it.

EricaySFC - May 11, 2005 08:59 PM (GMT)
Ten endlers? That's too many IMO...even if it is planted.

Hmmm...white clouds are nice fish, I have four of them. Adults- two inches. These guys originate from the mountain streams of Southern China, so they actually prefer cooler water. I would say three white cloud mountain minnows in a 5g, and if it's planted....four. Eh, that's just me. :)

Pygmy cories (only if you want to do alot of maint)
African Dwarf Frogs (if availible you might be able to go with about 4)
Dwarf pufferfish (If available about 2 or 3 might work)
Saltwater Nano (and then....) (only if you wanna spend alot of money)
Betta (male or female) (Nice  )
Pygmy Sunfish (Never heard of it, but I would say NO)
Pygmy Gouramis (2 or 3 would be nice) ~ You did mean Sparkiling gourmai right?
Heterandria Formosa (Hets) (5 MALE ones would be allright)
Ghost Shrimp (Cool! Go shrimpies!)
Dwarf Crayfish (I'd stick to shrimp ;))
Endlers (5 MALE ones would be cool)
Neon Tetra (No, their far too active for such a small tank)
Bumblebee Gobies (brackish) (2 of these would be cool, but the tank would look empty)
Harlequin Rasboras (No, Far to big & active. Also, they cant really school in a tank like that)
Spotted Rasbora/Dwarf Rasbora (rasbora maculata) (I suppose 6 of these would work..)
Snails (They might eat your plants, so be carefull on what type you get)
Kuhlie laches (No, I dont think they'll like such a small tank)
WCMM's (they might work.. But you'd need alot of maint)

Hope I helped

I thought the guideline was one puffer per 5g? TBH in a tank that small I'd not risk it for two.

germanshepherdlver - July 11, 2005 07:01 PM (GMT)
yeah its 1 dwarf puffer per 5gallons
theyre just really territorial.some people get away with a male and a female but i wouldnt advise it

Punkypuffer - July 11, 2005 07:06 PM (GMT)
it's more like one for every 3-4 gallons... not that it matters that much...

Saucy - July 13, 2005 11:59 PM (GMT)
Oh!!! Go for the dwarf puffer!!! I absolutely LOVE mine. He's so adorable and always comes to say hello. He's kind of like a betta... only a LOT smaller and less fussy.

I mean, how cute is this??

10 endlers isnt alot... they are only like 1/2inch long at full size... get 10 endlers... i have 3 male endlers in my 10G ... molly ate one of them :P

2 dwarfs??? HA!!! they need 5gallons each and even a 10G for 2 is a mistake... they would fight for food... one would starve!!!

jflowers - July 14, 2005 07:02 PM (GMT)
I would go with either...

small group of peacock gudgens 3 - 4 (ask dwarfs, very nice fish)

Badis badis or even better scarlet badis (Badis bengalensis) 3 - 4 Badis badis, 4 - 5 Scarlet badis.

1 DP nothing with it as you know.

2 male and 4 female endlers if you can shift the fry (shouldn't be difficult, lots of demand round here anyway)

My choice would be... oh I can't choose

Jon

OrkyBetta - July 14, 2005 08:46 PM (GMT)
I would get a betta. If you don't already have experiance with them, they are fab little fish. Just make sure you do something about the current, though. They would love living in a thickly planted tank, and are colorful and easy.

BettasRFriends - July 14, 2005 09:18 PM (GMT)
Whoo sorry guys, I totally forgot I had this topic going on. How does zebra danio sound to you guys? I recently bought 4 but I can give them to my sister if they're not compatiable in a 5 gallon tank.

dud - July 14, 2005 11:06 PM (GMT)
Sorry, danios are FAR too active & I think they prefer at least 6 of thier own kind, so give them to your sis (& then buy a couple more ;))

photorah - July 15, 2005 12:59 AM (GMT)
How tall is it?

You could put three glofish in it. Have it be the odity tank.

Transginic fish. They glow in the dark.

Why im is so stuck on these fish latley.

BettasRFriends - July 15, 2005 01:41 AM (GMT)
The tank is about a foot tall or so. Here is what the tank looks like (from Yeeviabettas): http://tropicalfishchat.net/index.php?showtopic=1040

photorah - July 15, 2005 01:46 AM (GMT)
the you can get about 5 in there.

dud - July 15, 2005 03:24 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't do glo fish for exactly the same reason I wouldnt do danios :P :( There baciclly the same fish!

OohFeeshy - July 15, 2005 10:12 AM (GMT)
They are, Glofish just have jellyfish genes injected into the eggs.

i have two in a 3 gallon eclipse. they've been in there for well over a year until we moved a couple of weeks ago and they got a new jebo 5 gallon... neither have starved yet! what i do is get a syringe and shoot bloodworms right in front of each of their faces... they both get plenty of food.
