Well I decided to try dosing Kalk i new a little bit about it and how unstable it was, so got on the internet and did some research alot of research I might add. Also learned it is extremely alkaline and to slow drip. so I bought a gas can drilled a quarter inch hole about half inch from the bottom to keep participated kalk out of the tank and poked a very small hole in the top with a needle. and have it dosing it a drop avery 4 seconds. probaly a gallon in three days. know i would like to talk alot about this stuff and tell how unstable it is and what kinda of chemical reactions take place when it come in contact with CO2 and all that stuff I really a'm just posting to see if anybody out there uses it and what they think about it. So far I love it and my corals love the extra Calcium probally tonight I will tell about all of it charateristics and Rit. can put it as a pinned topic so far i have been monitering my pH and everything and everything checks out good just want to see what other people think about Calcium Hydroxide.
I will post topic about Calcium Hydroxide for you to post Rit.
I drip Kalkwasser daily on all my tanks with SPS or lots of live rock.
Its a great method of increasing the calcium levels in the tank. You should notice a lot more coralline algae growth, clam growth and SPS coral growth in a couple of weeks. Your PH should be extremely stable and rock solid as should calcium levels. I usually shoot for at least 450 and up to 480 (yeah I know thats a bit high...). Much beyond that and I have had it precipitate from the water turning my tank into a snow globe.
I usually mix one heaping spoon full into a glass one gallon Jug that has a spigot at the bottom about an inch up. I wait about 12 hours before using and use only the clear liquid inbetween the crude that settles on the bottom and the film on top. I usually drip this from a DIY dripper made from 2 liter soda bottles. They are easy and cheap to use as they will get mineral build up on them after a few weeks abd become difficult to use due to valve clogging. I almost always drip Kalk at night time to help keep the Ph up when it would natrually be lower than when the lights are on.
Dripping Kalwasser is much less complicated and less dangerous than a Calcium reactor. You can also use pickling Lime in the grocery store too and not have to pay the huge mark ups that the LFS puts on it since its in a nice pretty container with a fish on it. Its the same dang thing at a fraction of the price for tightwads like me!
Rather spend your money on corals huh. I have a question though how often do you change the contaiers. I personnally like to keep my calcium levels that high all your calcium bearing algeas go crazy over it.
I have been monitering my pH to and the color seems to be inbetween two colors just cant figure out if it is 8.1 or 8.4.
I switch out drippers when ever the calcium build up gets pretty heavy. The gallon glass jug gets washed out one a week.
